Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The goal of the contest was to improve the quality of existing but information-poor articles, with a focus on the articles on women's contribution and involvement, science and technology. We want to involve both current editors and potential new editors in this competition.

This year's contest covered a wide range of subjects, with a particular emphasis on works that represented women, their rights, and violations of those rights. This year's contest started with a distinct category specifically for these pieces. The majority of the entries on the list came from the category of stub articles.

More than a thousand users signed up for the competition. The contest was not easy, as individual participants had to translate at least really long articles into Bangla; but considering various aspects, it was much needed to ensure the quality of these articles. Apart from completing the whole article, the size of that article contributed to the final result to make fair result. A total of 147 articles from 77 contributors got improved in the whole contest. According to the rules of the contest, contributors need to translate the whole article from English to Bangla; and following them, a total of 106 articles got accepted for the contest, with a total of 4,66,590 words. The articles were reviewed by the Reviewers' team, who are experienced Wikipedians themselves, and further checked by the organizing team. 11 reviewers worked for proper evaluation of these articles as per the rules set by the contest organizers.

Throughout the contest, weekly meetings were organized, where participants and organizers were present. The organizers provided answers to participants’ queries about the contest. A tutorial video explaining the different ways of contributing was provided so that newcomers can understand properly.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of articles improved: 150+ 147 The contributors improved the articles in various forms. A total of 4,66,590 words were added to the articles accepted for the contest.
Number of participants: 100+ 77 Only the articles with improved quality and the people who improved those articles are counted. Though the contest was participated by many, rough/machine translation was a big problem and therefore those articles (and the people who worked on those articles) were out of count.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

With more than 1000 accounts registered for the competition, local and print media coverage of the event played a factor in drawing participants from all over the nation. There are several entries on the Bangla Wikipedia that lack important details. However, given that they cover some extremely essential subjects, the significance of those essays is undeniable. The community has long wanted to put something like this together. Through this contest, articles on different areas including science, technology, biography, environment, philosophy, etc. are chosen and improved. Articles like Website, Anemia, Molecular mass, etc. were improved through this contest. Like the previous year, we focussed on gender gap or women empowerment-related articles as well as the duration of the contest covered International Women’s Day. The participants improved the articles like Women, Socialist feminism, etc. In the month of February, the active editor number was the highest this month considering both content and non-content pages, crossing the record set by the previous year's contest [1] The weekly meetings were helpful for the participants to solve their confusion; so that newcomers can get the necessary support. The tutorial video on how to contribute to this contest was also helpful and it has 1250 views as of the date of creating this report.

  • What did not work so well?

Although the contest attracted notable attention from the newcomers and achieved a significant active editor number throughout the contest, many of them couldn’t finish their tasks. Machine translation has been a big problem, nearly 20% of the submitted articles were marked as "not improved quality" and therefore we couldn't count them. Due to the improvement of online translation tools, reviewers had to work really hard to find these problems inside articles, leading to an increased amount of time for reviewing.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We shall keep creating supporting materials for the newcomers like this contest and will consider providing more organized resources for the reviewers to make the process faster.

Anything else

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

The weekly Zoom support and discussion sessions, in addition to the standard support mechanisms (on-wiki page, VRT queue, social media, other email assistance, etc.), were quite effective in assisting new editors. Additionally, the participants got to know the reviewers and could obtain direct assistance and recommendations. From the participants and reviewers, we have learned a lot that we want to use in our next article improvement contests and other similar initiatives.
