Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, the project goals were met and surpassed. The project has increased the level of awareness about Wikipedia and sister projects in the state and beyond. The new editors were able to create new articles and improve upon the existing ones by adding references, inline links, new sections, etc. Going forward, we look at improving and sustainability of the new editors with future capacity building training.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of events: 2 2 physical event (awareness and training) lasting over 3 hours each and Edit-a-thon which lasted for 3 weeks.
Number of participants: 35 45 participants We had 10 more participants than planned; 35 editors for the Edit-a-thon; and others (mostly females) could not participate in the training. This might be unconnected to culture and/or religious beliefs.
Number of new editors: 25 25+ new editors the target numbers were achieved and surpassed. Unfortunately, some couldn't sign up for the dashboard. Again since the participants had earlier created Usernames late last year (early December 2021) during registration the dashboard only captured them as returning editors with exception of about 5 editors.
Number of articles created or improved: 50+ 179 The target was accomplished and exceeded due to the level of training, feedback and enthusiasm of the participants to improve content about their culture, place/town, tourist sites, and notable personality (s), access to and visibility of their state. Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:


  • What worked well? The awareness campaign drives among the populace, students unions and institutions within Gombe State before and during the campaign increased participation in the campaign. The in-person training and post-training supports for participants encourage their content contribution and add more references to enhance the reliability of existing Wikipedia articles; making the target set for the campaign be achieved and surpassed.


  • What did not work so well? There were challenges while trying to access the grant funds which led to the delay in the project execution, invariably affecting the enthusiasm of the registered prospective participants. Furthermore, the issue of proxy IP block is an issue of concern to experienced Wikipedians let alone new editors in Africa. This damper the willingness of the new participants which resulted in a little loss of interest in some new editors however, participated due to efforts made to assist them in overcoming the challenges. Unfortunately, there was a low turnout from the registered females, this might be unconnected to culture and/or religious beliefs.


  • What would you do differently next time ? we will take precautionary measures and ensure the above-mentioned problem doesn't happen again such as requesting an IP Block exemption within the time frame of the event. We will look at the possibility of organizing an all female-only capacity building training to bridge the gender gap.

  9. Hand Sanitizers during the training= $25
  10. Branded Nose masks for facilitators and participants= $120
  11. Branded T-Shirt for facilitators and active participants: $120
  12. Certificate of participation for participants: $40

Total = $ 2,000
