Centre A/Centre A x Rungh: Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon 2020

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to cancel our in-person 2020 Wikipedia Edit-a-thon event as instructed by the Wikimedia Foundation. As a result, we were unable to meet our original goal. We had to spend the funds to pay cancellation fees to the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon facilitator. However, we were able to spend most of the remaining fund towards an online program with Brooklyn-based photographer Pixy Liao. The artist talk focused on topics of gender, sexuality, and equality, which stemmed from her ongoing exploration of the dynamic of a romantic relationship and what I think filled the gap caused by the cancellation of the edit-a-thon. The event was very well attended and exceeded our expectations, with 245 people in attendance from all over the world. Although we were disappointed to cancel our 2020 edition of the in-person Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, we were glad that we were able to pivot our programming to still address topics and issues that are closely related to the Art + Feminism and Centre A mandates. Thank you for this support!

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

The biggest challenge that we faced for the event was the closure of the gallery resulting from the lockdown. At the beginning of the pandemic, we had to take time to pivot to online programming, and there was a learning curve to adjust to our new realities. We learned how to hold online events step by step. However, it has been a rewarding experience to engage with a broader audience and offer different accessibility options virtually. The experience that we acquired in 2020 has paved the way for us to plan and execute future online Wikipedia edit-a-thon events, including our “how to navigate our online database” workshop and our drop-in Q&A session taking place this month.
