Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Through our partnership with the Helen and Morris Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, we were able to meet our goals and beyond. Our goals for this year’s project was to recruit new editors, increase skills for existing editors, add or improve content, and collect, add, and improve content for underrepresented Asian-diasporic artists and organizations.

Alongside the Belkin Gallery, we were able to recruit and provide 20 new Wikipedia editors with the skills and resources to continue to create and improve Wikipedia articles. Together, we were also able to create and improve 79 articles, a large section of which were underrepresented Asian-diasporic artists, curators, and organizations.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of events: 3 6 In partnership with the Belkin Art Gallery, we were able to host additional events not noted in our original rapid grant application, which included the following: Re-Reading the Asianadian Reading Group, Introduction to Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, How to Navigate Centre A Online Database Workshop, Citation Workshop, and two in-person Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.
Number of participants: 60 85 With the increased number of events, we were able to attract a wider range of audiences who were interested in participating in the different events. We were also able to successfully cross-promote through different social media channels the different events throughout the month and ensure that the attendants at each event were made aware of any upcoming events and workshops.
Number of new editors: 10 25 With our partnership with the Belkin Art Gallery, we were able to attract a number of students from UBC who were interested in becoming editors, and through our wide range of workshops and events, we were able to teach and train these new editors to participate in the edit-a-thon.
Number of of articles created or improved: 30-35 79 Combined with the Belkin Gallery’s Edit-a-thon, we were able to improve and create significantly more articles than originally anticipated. Through our How to Navigate Centre A’s Online Database workshop, we were able to add and improve content for underrepresented Asian-diasporic artists and organizations by utilizing our resources and materials from our Reading Room, which is closely aligned with our mission as a non-profit public gallery.
Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 15 20 Throughout the project, we had groups of students and community members who were interested in the various events and workshops that Centre A and the Belkin Gallery had offered. We were also able to successfully cross-promote the different events throughout the month and ensure that the attendants at each event were made aware of the upcoming events and workshops. As a result, there was a higher number of returning participants for various events.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Our partnership with the Belkin Gallery allowed us to reach a wider audience of students and faculty who were interested in participating in the events and the edit-a-thon itself. Centre A was also able to focus on the underrepresented Asian communities within the arts and culture sector in Canada through our “How to Navigate Centre A’s Online Database Workshop.” With the workshop, we were able to provide editors access to resources from our library to improve and create new articles on Asian–diasporic artists, curators, and organizations.

During our post-mortem discussion with the Belkin Gallery, we were able to identify methods to incorporate classroom learning and plan to ask professors to include the Art and Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon as part of their lesson plans for future iterations. We hope to continue to develop partnerships with not only the Belkin Gallery but also other organizations in our community.

  • What did not work so well?

We found the first two events that we had hosted weren’t as well attended as we had anticipated. We believe that it was due to the timing of the events, some of our earlier events coincided with midterms and assignment due dates. Since the majority of our targeted audience members were arts and cultural workers, students, and staff members at UBC, the attendance of the first two events was lower than the later events.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Although we met and exceeded our original goal, the biggest challenge we faced for this year’s event was planning with different organizations. With varying schedules and capacity from different organizations, it took longer than anticipated to confirm everything. For future events in the upcoming years, Centre A would confirm details of partnerships with other art organizations in early February and ensure that all the events have at least 2-3 weeks of social media promotion for each event. We would also start launching the Art + Feminism events a week later than we did this year to ensure that it doesn’t coincide with midterms.
