Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We are generally happy with how the project went though we faced some problems and serious set backs by the initial people who were engaged in the opening event. We were however able to achieve our goals through the Matabeleland Region team. The team was able to reach the beautiful places around Matopo for the photo hunt, they were able to capture images related to the theme of the contest. the other goal met was the on training individuals and introduce them to the Wikimedia space as it is still new in Zimbabwe.

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
300 photos 74 Matabeleland Region only had a photo hunt while other district failed to participate. The many photos taken were not all of them uploaded as the participants chose the best of the photos individually.
5 events 1 opening event in Mashonaland Region, 1 photo hunt and 1 closing ceremony After the disappointment from the lack of involvement by the other participants, we had no choice but to do a closing ceremony with one Region participating.
8 new participants 5 new from Matabeleland Region As Wikimedia is still new in Zimbabwe, we invited teachers form the Heritage and History departments to participate. We had 5 New editors and 5 previous participants in other wiki Projects

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? We successfully introduced new members to contributing to Wikimedia from Zimbabwe. In the Mat Region team, all went according to plan as the participants had a fun day out in the hills around Matopo looking for Home and Habitant pictures to share with the world.
  • What did not work so well? 1. The initial group who did the opening ceremony were no faithful as they thought this was going to profit them thus never went out for the photo hunt whilst the data and transport was given to them. 2. The number of pictures were not enough as the participants were using their phones some which were of not good quality.
  • What would you do differently next time? 1. Accompany the participants for the photo hunt and not trust their word of mouth. 2. Hire or purchase a professional camera for better pictures that can be used without reservations..

Anything else[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

Florence take aways...

  • Always make sure from the start that participants do not think they will get paid. This is volunteer job. We know it will discourage many participants, but this is a fact. The best way to balance that during edit-a-thons and training sessions (beyond the price of seeing your country well described on Wikipedia of course...) is to provide a friendly and confortable environnement. This indeed means a safe space, a system to welcome kids for the moms, good food and drinks, lot’s of encouragement, and reimbursement of expenses for those who are short on money. Always remember to provide fun moments in the day (we can discuss options :)), not editing only
  • Never, ever, pay them in advance. Reimbursement of expenses (or stipends) only to provide at the END of the editing day, if they survived so far... Make them sign up on a document when they join the event (collect their contact data this way). And at the end of the day, give them the reimbursement and make them sign the document to say they got the money.
  • Last note... renting a camera is a good move. Better image quality and at least... if editors forget to upload, the material is not lost. Just remember to change the metadata information on the camera, so that the images are not attributed to the company. We had many images deletion due to this in the past
  • Well, we all know it is not easy Siche. All of us faced that... you are not alone. Keep faith !
