Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we achieved the goals we set for the project.

We believe that the aim of the project, which was to introduce participant on how to source for reference and cite from Books and Journal online and use it in creating and improving Wikipedia articles and Wikidata items was met. The workshop was successfully organised, it saw over 40 participants from different communities participating to learn more about the Wikimedia movement and citations. This was followed up with the contest which run from 18th December, 2021 to 13th January, 2022 which yielded great results with reference to the campaign dashboard.[1]At the end of the contest, 32 people participated, 210 articles were created, 38,000 articles were improved and 329 references were improved.

We organized a day online workshop via Zoom, Speakers on the day were Felix Nartey from the WMF, Maxwell Beganim an Open Advocate and Jonathan Gedzeve from African Library & Information Associations and Institutions (AFLIA), They spoke about the need and importance of Citations in the Wikimedia Projects, The Open Movement and Online library resources for Citation respectively. Participants were from different parts of the world. An in-person edit-a-thon was organized for local newbies and volunteers who participated in the workshop. We run a contest for participants of the training sessions. The contest which was initially planned for a month was extended to one month and a week due to the festive season.
Create and improve 250+ existing and new articles which are verifiable and reliable	Articles were improved and new articles were created which were verifiable and reliable	210 new articles and over 38,000 existing articles were improved with 329 references. A total of 47,500 edits were made.
20 participants	Over 40 people participated in the events	We had over 40 participants participating in the online workshop via Zoom, we had people joining from India, U.S.A, Brazil, Nigeria and Ghana. The contest also had contestants from other countries..

• What worked well?

Partnership: Our Partners Included Youth Observatory, E-Governance and Internet Governance Foundation of Africa (EGIGFA), African Library & Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA), Wiki Update Podcast and Open Foundation West Africa. The Youth Observatory which is the Youth standing group of The Internet Society provided us with their Zoom Room for the Online workshop. African Library & Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) provided resource persons to talk about how to access Online library resources for Citation. All partners were helpful in the promotion of the event.

Participants: The Zoom meeting was well attended. We had participants from different parts of the world joining from different time zones.

• What did not work so well?

IP Block : Majority of Newbies that join the events were having issues registering an account and editing due to IP block. On the day of the in person edit-a-thon the IP of the router we were using got blocked, so we had to connect our mobile phone to access the internet.

Gender Gap: Ladies did not participate much in the contest as we anticipated.

• What would you do differently next time?

Newbies that will register for the event will be informed to create their account earlier before the day of the event.

We will strategically partner with women organizations and let them know the need for them to participate to help bridge the gender gap. .
