Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Students numbering 21, participated in a 2-day Wikipedia session as part of the Wiki For Human Rights Campaign, where they contributed content (articles and images) about the environment to Wikipedia.

We were exceptionally impressed about the outcomes of this campaign and level of contribution in general which surpassed last year's campaign. Two sessions were held. The first to introduce Wikipedia and related projects to the students. Next was upload sessions. Images uploaded had the environment as theme and depicted the environment of New Mexico. We initiated three main goals during the grant application and all were successful. The goals are as following:

To introduce students to the Wiki for Human Rights campaign and get them thinking about how they can contribute content on human rights and the environment on Wikipedia and other sister projects.

To communicate the level of New Mexico Climate challenges that affect water resources and brainstorm on how to reverse the trend through Wikipedia.

To use the Wiki for Human Rights Campaign as a tool to help establish a Wikimedia presence in the community.

In sum, this project is important because it will position college students as part of the solution to the state’s environmental issues by documenting and contributing fact-based content on Wikipedia.

Both sessions were successful as students were willing participants and showed a sense of commitment.

Students participated fully. For most of them, it was their first time to learn about adding content on Wikipedia and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons.

Myths about Wikipedia that students had heard were a potential threat to contribution. However, after explaining how Wikipedia works and debunking false information, they understood how useful the project was.

Although this project was centered on photos (579 pictures uploaded), 14 new articles were created, 148 articles edited. and 13M article views. (All these figures were at the time of report)
