Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we met all of our goals and even surpassed them.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
The jury is able to successfully assess entries and unanimously decide the international winners for each prize category of the contest. All entries have been adequately assessed and winners decided on.
All international winners have been successfully contacted and received their deserved gifts. All winners have been duly contacted and the disbursement of prizes is almost concluded.
Higher quality of contributions This year, over 3,000 quality articles were submitted for the contest in 19 languages, which is more than thrice the anticipated results.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. Our communication plan really worked well, as we were able to achieved a higher level of engagement and participation across the board.
  2. All our targets for this contest were met, which were mostly due to replicating and improving on some of the practices we learned from the previous editions, while trying not to make the same mistakes.
  3. Getting more language communities included in the contest.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. The contest grew exponentially this year, that it almost became unmanageable. This was especially true for the jury aspect of the contest. Since the assessment of articles has a qualitative aspect to it, we had to rely on language volunteers to signup and help to review articles, which generally led to persistent delays and abandonment from different people.
  2. Giftcards (which are the easiest non-cash rewards) also presented many challenges. Amazon is not globally available (and some regions, like India, also do not let you buy gift cards with foreign cards), and alternatives being suggested by winners are typically not very straightforward. All pending disbursements are being delayed due to varying complications around issuing giftcards.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. Due to the jury complications, we have decided to take a different approach to organization in the next edition by having dedicated language team for as many languages as possible before the start of the contest, and making only those languages qualified for prizes. This would prevent unnecessary drawbacks after the conclusion of the contest.
  2. It would really be great if WMF can allow cash rewards, as it remains the best way to transfer value to winners.
