Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
The collaboration between the six participating Arab countries (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and Iraq) was a major success. Forming a regional community of organizers allowed for better coordination, shared experiences, and a united effort in promoting Wiki Loves Earth. The idea of introducing small prizes for the top 3 winners across the Arab world proved to be an effective motivator for photographers, encouraging greater participation and engagement. This initiative also helped raise awareness of Wikimedia Commons as a valuable platform for sharing and preserving natural heritage images in the Arab region.
- What did not work so well?
While the project ran smoothly overall, one area that could have been improved was the promotion and outreach in some participating countries. Not all local communities had the same level of experience or communication reach, which may have affected the visibility of the regional prize initiative in certain areas. Additionally, the regional coordination, while effective, could be more structured in future editions to streamline decision-making and communication
- What would you do differently next time?
Next time, we would prepare a stronger joint communication strategy from the beginning, including unified visual materials, clear timelines, and coordinated social media campaigns in Arabic and local dialects. We would also organize regular online coordination meetings between country teams to align efforts, share progress, and solve any issues quickly. Additionally, we would consider expanding the number of regional prizes or creating special categories (e.g., youth photographer, biodiversity hotspot) to further engage participants and reward a wider range of contributions.
