Grants:Project/Rapid/WMHKG/Community Relaunch Project 2021-22/Report

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The project had a good start at the beginning of the grant period. We were able to organise 1 meetup in December 2021 and made significant progress in boosting our social media reach. Unfortunately, the overall progress of the grant came to a standstill in early 2022 due to a sudden surge of Covid-19 and very strict local regulation against any in-person gatherings. With no clear path to complete the grant in the foreseeable future, we decided to end the project ahead of the 1-year schedule as originally envisioned.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Meetups[edit]

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
  • 6 meetups, 60-90 total participants (i.e. 10-15 participants/ session)
  • 20-40 unique participants in the entire funding period (i.e. we envision 50% participants to be newcomers and 50% to be experienced Wikimedians)
  • Retention rate of 25% (i.e. For every 4 new people who join, 1 person will return to participate in another session)
  • 1 meetup actually held in December 2021, 11 total participants
  • 5 participants had never joined meetups organised by WMHKG before
  • Retention rate was not measurable due to the lack of repetitive events
The outcome fell far below target. In-person gatherings are severely restricted since early 2022 due to a local surge of Covid-19 infections. We had previously experimented with virtual meetups but their outcomes were far worse than in-person ones. We decided to pause organising any in-person events since then.

Nonetheless, we have learnt the logistical aspects of organising a in-person meetup (incl. registration, promotion, securing location, materials, Friendly Space rules) and we can make good use of those experience in the future.

Wiki Loves Earth Hong Kong 2022[edit]

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
  • 100 participants
  • 400 new photo uploaded to Commons
We are unable to run the contest in the grant period. The plan to hold a contest was cancelled amidst local surge of Covid-19 and strict restrictions on in-person gatherings.

Digital marketing campaign[edit]

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram) should have a total of 1,000 - 3,000 followers at the end of the project.

(Baseline: In October 2021, our Facebook page had 192 followers. Our Instagram profile was created in late October.)

Number of followers on our social media channels as of July 2022:
  • Facebook: 647
  • Instagram: 272
  • Telegram Public Channel: 796
We have achieved the target outcome within the grant period. As of July 2022, the total number of followers in all of our social medial sites is 1,715.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The social media campaign worked well. We captured trends in the online world and attracted much organic growth from our posts. Although we can't held more meetups in the grant period, the first meetup was well-run and achieved target.

  • What did not work so well?

With much regret that the plans for meetup and photo contest was moot and unworkable due to a sudden surge of Covid-19 and severe restriction in any in-person group activity. We were forced to abandon the plans.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Prepare contingency plans and alternative activities in case things originally planned were not executable.
