Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? The number of monuments has increased in the database, notably with the inclusion of monumental trees. There are now over 12 thousand monuments listed in the Monuments database, of which 47% are covered with at least one picture. The number of participants was about what we expected (93 vs 100), and the number of photos exceeded largely what we expected (14369 photos uploaded vs 2-3000 expected), of which 653 are currently being used in the projects, which means more monuments have been a photograph on Commons for the first time. This edition of WLM in Portugal went very well, considering the pandemic, with more media coverage with competition being covered in more local newspapers and websites.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
100 participants 93 participants 62 (67%) newcomers, which means most participants are new to Wikimedia projects. This is lower than previous years, and we notice that newcomers in previous years are returning more often to subsequent editions.
2000-3000 uploaded pictures 14369 uploaded pictures a few contestants uploaded thousands of pictures, aiming at the largest number of original monuments photographed prize.
200-400 photos used in projects 653 photos used in projects The prize for largest number of different monuments attracted a fair number of participants which leads to many photos uploaded of rarer monuments, which are then used in several projects because they are the first ones available.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We contacted all the municipalities before the start of the competition, which got us a fair number of mentions in local newspapers. The upload of data about the Monumental Trees to Wikidata was quite successful, and provided additional incentive to photographers to discover more of their local heritage. We also initiated an instagram account [1] recently and have showcased the winners of WLM as its first posts. We intend to build up an audience there during the upcoming year.

  • What did not work so well?

We underspent our social media budget due to difficulties creating a campaign on twitter, but we did not see a decrease in engagement in the competition. It seems the sitenotice and the local newspaper coverage were more important to bring awareness about the contest.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Next time we will try to improve our website, showcasing previous years winners.

Remaining funds[edit]

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.

Yes, we have not spent yet the 240 euros for printing the winning photos and the prize certificates for the winners, as the epidemiological conditions are not favourable to conduct in-person events yet. We would like to retain the remaining funds (1690-1420.71=269.29€) for the printing of the photographs as soon as conditions allow to organize an exhibit.
