Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wikimédiens du Bénin User Group has organized, like internationally, the first edition of Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos contest. Thanks to our local community, we've reached our goals. The contributions helped to improve the quality of wikipedia contents about Benin on the french wikipedia portal and the Wikipedia Fon language incubator. The contributions helped to increase the use of photos uploaded during the previous wiki loves (earth, monuments, Africa, ...) photos contests. New articles have been created and new contributors joined our community. Due to the COVID pandemic, all the activities were online. Six webinars have been held with Zoom. Overall, we are very happy with how the project went.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

At the end of the WPWP campaign in Benin, contributors had added photos to Wikipedia articles without illustration or not enough illustrated. The contest had promoted the usage of photos uploaded during several photo contests, organized by Wikimedia communities, in articles. The contest also helped to improve both old and new contributors. Please find below our statistics:

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
20 participants 27 registered Goal reached. 117 (on WPWPBJ + WPWP hashtag) participants and 27 registered on our project page.[1],[2]
1000 images are used on 200 Wikipedia articles a total of 3603 editions on 2264 pages Goal reached. We weren't able to count the number of used images during the campaign. The hashtags tool only gave us the number of editions and the number of affected pages.[2]

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The organization of the online sessions has allowed us to reach other target groups who are starting to take an interest in Wikipedia and its sister projects. With this first edition of the WPWP, the Benin wikimedians community reinforces the passion of its members to contribute. Online activities have made it possible to respect barrier actions against the spread of the COVID-19 disease and to preserve the good health of volunteers in our community. The constant support and listening of the involved contributors helped to achieve our objectives.

  • What did not work so well?

The low speed of the Internet connection in some areas prevents a large number of participants from attending the webinars; sometimes others saw themselves disconnected, sometimes others could not have access to the Zoom room. This situation did not allow some members to better contribute during the contest. In addition, because of bad handling, some Wikipedia pages have not been modified or are deleted. The blocking of the #WPWP hashtags for two days by an administrator of french Wikipedia was a reason for discouragement among some of our contributors who did not want to continue the adventure.

  • What would you do differently next time?

FOr the next time, we plan to encourage, involve and motivate more new contributors, old and members of our user group, to join us in the contest, by making a strong communication around the project. Also, we will organize more editing sessions (if possible, IRL sessions) so that our members know very well how to edit Wikipedia pages without mishandling. Finally, we suggest extending the competition to remote areas to increase participation. All administrators should also be informed of the launch of the WPWP contest to avoid inconvenience in the future.
