Project idea

[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit]

Explain the problem that you are trying to solve with this project. What is the issue you want to address? You can update and add to this later. The problem is that there are pages identified as needing attention while for some articles there is a need for expert feedback but the experts are too busy to give feedback and suggestions. The assumption to be tested is that some experts will be more willing to give feedback while "playing" a game based on content analyis approach. The challenge is to identify and select pages needing attention and get feedback from experts who attend a professional conference between and after formal sessions.

What is your solution?

[edit]

The proposed solutions consists of several steps: - Select from Wikipedia To-do list one or several related articles/pages which are flagged and need special attention. - Identify a related professional conference with leading experts as speakers. Send them invitations for a game demo and/or visit the Wiki reQuesTour booth. - Register as a presentor/exhibitor. Arrange registration for local Wikipedians-volunteers/students who will be trained to help facilitate the game and also explain the game to conference participants. - During the conference: setup a booth-display, organize volunteers help at the booth, present the game at the conference (if allowed). Arrange a full scale game session during or after formal sessions of the conference. The game can be played as a board game with a group of appx. ten participants or as Web game/Mobile app with larger or smaller number of participants. - the game is designed to produce forward comments, suggestions and feedback related to the pre-selected article/s. This feedback will be forwarded to the Wikipedia editors. - -

Project goals

[edit]

Explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. The main goal is to improve the quality of pre-selected articles by pointing mistakes and implementing some suggestions made by experts attending a professional conference. Preferably this will be done with volunteers/students who will be trained to further facilitate the game in other settings.

Project plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Build and test the game. Build a website and an app. Attend the relevant professional conference. Forward feedback to Wikipedia editors. Compare the accuracy and quality of the article's new version to the old version.Compare the Wikipedia article to the Britannica relevant article. Follow up with some experts who expressed willingness to be involved with Wikipedia.

Budget

[edit]

- boardgame graphic design and printouts 5,000 USD - boardgame paraphenelia (specially printed stickers and hats, Highlighter markers) 3,000 USD - game web design and programming 9,000 USD - game mobile apps. design and programming 9,000 USD - travel registration and accomodation to one national conference (e.g. MIT on MOOC) 3000 USD - travel registration and accomodation to one international conference (e.g. Madrid on MOOC) 4000 USD - Expenses for booth display and setup ( poster, stickers, brochures) 1000 USD - Materials for volunteers (game materials, T shirts, hats ) 1000 USD

Community engagement

[edit]

The specific target audience consists of experts and professionals related to an article or a cluster of articles. They are the best source of feedback but usually are too busy to become Wikipaedia editors. By using the gamification approach to article content analysis and with the help of students and/or volunteers they could improve the quality the content of some or many Wikipedia articles.

Sustainability

[edit]

According to the rate of adoption by volunteers the webgame and app. could be used by any Wikipedian for fun and/or for tracing problems or mistakes at any selected article or topic.

Measures of success

[edit]

- Number of articles commented by experts - Number of comments per article - Number of suggestions for new articles
