Wiki Loves Earth

Since the user group was created, the Wiki Loves Earth has been one of the projects that generates more results and repercution in Brazil, opening doors for many interviews and news articles published in the main local communication channels with more than 40.000 new pictures uploaded to commons during the last editions. This project aim to result in new quality content being contributed to the Wikimedia projects in targeted content areas, and attract new good contributors for our movement.

SMART OBJECTIVES

Main focus

Creation of new content for Wikimedia Commons and improvement of articles on Wikipedia with focus on natural heritage.

  • From January to July, 10.000 images uploaded and 900 in use on a Wikimedia projects.
  • From May to July, 100 articles created or improved.

  • Engage at least one participant in a GLAM project through a personal/private archive, uploading 100 new high quality files to commons

Community Building

This program will focus on improving Wikimedia awareness in Brazil, recruiting new contributors and engaging current members of our community to participate in Brazilian and lusophone Wikimedia projects.

SMART Objectives

Main focus

To create awareness about the wikimedia movement and its projects using different communication channels. Promote the sense of belonging to a global community with a common goal, engaging our current and new contributors, with frequent off-line activities, by providing opportunities for contributors to meet face to face and by experimenting with ways to recognize the outstanding work of contributors. On a more broad sense, we will carry out these activities always with the wikimedia gender gap issue in mind, always trying to minimize its presence.

Activities
  • translate content produced by WMF and other affiliates, create new instructional and informative materials, like: videos, interviews, brochures, infographics to engage and support current and new contributors

  • create thematic meetings and workshops (edit-a-thons, hackathons and informal conversations), both on general topics and more specific ones to promote diversity and reduce the gender gap.

  • work with other communities around the world, improving the international relation between the user group members, international communities, other chapters and groups.

GLAM and Institutional Partnerships

Reinforcing the importance of institutional and GLAM partnerships on Wikimedia projects and contents, this program focuses on developing initiatives and activities that will generate useful content for the wikimedia projects. In the next semestre we intend to achieve this by strengthening current partnerships and searching for new opportunities in Brazil, and in international cooperations.

Partnership with cultural institutions and professionals to create and improve GLAM projects, promote events and cultural mapping to identify potential partners.

  • 1 GLAM institutional partnership executed and documented, laying the foundation for future GLAM work, and resulting in 600 files uploaded to commons improving at least 100 articles.

  • 1 GLAM edit-a-thon for training and content usage
  • 2 new GLAM partnerships with private archives/photographers, resulting in 400 new images upload on commons impacting in at least 100 articles.

UN WikiProject

In 2017 our group started a partnership with UN Brazil starting the contacts through the communication department in Rio de Janeiro. As a result we had several meetings and the confirmed participation of UN in our scientific conference in Niteroi - RJ. Based on these conversations we started the WikiProject:UN on pt.wiki with focus on content creation and improvements, mainly focusing on the 2030 agenda. Following the good results and potential impact of this initiative we aim to improve this relation during the next semester, expanding this partnership to other projects, UN departments involving more contributors from our community, connecting UN with other institutions and initiatives through the wikimedia projects and local and international activities, mainly in the lusophone community.

Institutional Partnerships

Aiming to establish our user group as a formal and professional organization, partnerships are crucial for the sustainable growth and resources raising. We intend to leverage existing partnerships to build awareness of our goals and activities, and create opportunity to develop new relationships and projects.

To work alongside organizations that focus on culture, education, open knowledge and technology from the private and public sectors.
