Learning story[edit]

*

To implement our grant, we reached to several institutions, regarding GLAM and education, presenting our work, aiming to create corporations and partnerships. We worked intensely reaching to several institutions, from which we got positive feedback as an initial start. Through numerous meetings and email exchange, we managed to push memorandum of understanding with some of these institutions. However, due to bureaucratic structures these institutions hold, the process of reviewing and signing the MoU was delayed. Even though we initiated some important MoU such as with University of Prishtina, UBT university, Museum of Kosovo and Museum of Albania, the signing of these MoU requested a lot of effort, as we needed to constantly remind them on this matter.

This experience gave us some valuable lessons which we look forward to implementing the following grant period:

  • When dealing with formal institutions we need to plan and initiate contact as early as possible as the relationship building process takes time;
  • We should drop our “shotgun approach”, rather focus our energy in building in one-two institutions which can have positive feedback & impact
  • Constantly ping the institutions asking on progress regarding the potential partnership
  • Create and maintain close relationships with key personnel/management of the organization as they are very important in moving forward the partnership.

Education

Education is one of our three program pillars, through which we aim to foster relationships with educational institutions and their educators. As this was the first long-term grant we received, we worked intensively in expanding this pillar, by conducting numerous meetings with institutions such as high schools and universities, as well as professors. To kick off the program, we managed to integrate Wikipedia as an extra credit assignment for two universities classes: Art & Design class at UBT university and Professional Development of Teachers class at the University of Prishtina, Faculty of Education. In Albania, we have been working with high schools in the region of Berat, in partnership with Peace Corps Albania, through which we held several workshops and editathons.

Goal Activities Involved Description Status
Establish partner relations with educational institutions; UBT memorandum in Prishtina The professor from UBT that we are working currently, presented the idea to the University’s upper management. During this period we were able to set relationships with 3 institutions, 2 of which are in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding. However, the bureaucracy of public institutions has slowed this process.

Goal Activities Involved Description Status

This activity was our starting point for making GLAM institutions aware of the opportunities that Wikiprojects (Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata) offer in the promotion of their mission.
