From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Welcome back from Wikimania 2016!

Participant[edit]

Borovi4ok

Mostly active at English Wiktionary. Member of Wikimedians of Bashkortostan User Group

Outcome[edit]

Option 1: Shared Experience: What is one way you shared something from your experience with your community (either locally or globally), after the event?

Together with User:Рөстәм Нурыев, we gave an interview about Wikimania to the Newspaper 'Bashkortostan', the leading, largest-readership Bashkir language newspaper. I spoke about what Wikipedia is, what Wiktionary is, briefly described the broad philosophy behind all Wikimedia projects, and invited readers to try their hands at contributing to Bashkir Wikipedia and/or other Bashkir-language Wiki-projects. As a hint, I stated that in Bashkir Wikipedia, there are articles about every populated place in Bashkortostan, so every new contributor could improve or expand the article about their appropriate home place. (To this day, Many Bashkirs are rural inhabitants and typically have strong connections to their home places, so I thought this appeal would hit home with many newspaper readers.)

Connections[edit]

Most importantly, I personally met User:Рөстәм Нурыев, who is head of Wikimedians of Bashkortostan User Group, and we spent a lot of time discussing the current status of Bashkir-language wiki-projects, planning activities etc.

One of the important events was Turkic languages meetup, where we discussed the current status of Turkic-language Wikipedias, discussed planning for a future Turkic-language Wiki-conference.

Some of the editors with whom I spent good times with, or talked about important topics, include User:Nataev, User:Elvonudinium, User:Basak, User:Putnik, User:Rehman. My primary interest was to share experience and learn from small-language Wiki contributors - smaller editions share many things in common, so advice and next-door experience helps a lot.

Anything else[edit]

This was my first Wikimania, and it was cool to meet people across the globe, all subscribing to free knowledge philosophy and contributing to Wiki projects to make the Web a better place. It gave me a lot of hints, tips, and inspiration. I came to better understand the people making up Wiki-community, and it feels really cool to be part of it!
