Proposed Participation

[edit]

My user name is Museumpaige http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Museumpaige I am an art historian that specializes in art and material culture that relates to Jewish life, analyzed mostly from a feminine perspective. There are few online resources devoted to this content. It is this reason that I believe it is critical for this perspective to raise its voice and forge partnerships with global institutions, be integrated into multi-cultural contexts and be easily accessible for all groups. Not only am I able to contribute research in this field, my real strength is that I am able to conceptualize dynamic ideas for engaging people and institutions in fun enhanced learning experiences to ignite visitors, communities and larger groups. There are many opportunities for me to form partnerships and engage existing museums to reexamine objects of material culture, significant historical sites and fine art by contributing new information, research and fresh perspective. These contributions should be intended to be relevant and valuable to all peoples for deeper learning and better social understanding. I am also interested in games for museums. These combined interests of Jewish art history and museum games make Wikipedia potentially the most valuable tool in education as the definitive global resource. It inspires me to envision innovations for fun engagement opportunities for all generations and levels of learning that may be accessible in many forms digitally and physically in the museum. For instance, beyond comprehensive Wiki page entries, a museum could have packs of learning cards for students to use in the classroom or in the gallery with images of works, data and trivia. These learning cards could have a QR code that links the player directly to Wikipedia for further learning. Or one could visit a historic site and follow street-sign sized QR codes, or weather-proof stickers that link to specific Wiki entries to experience a walking tour- this would be especially valuable for a Jewish art historical tour about 14th C. Erfurt Germany or Jewish highlights in the Lower East Side, NY, Morocco, Israel, Italy, China and more places. As a result of Jewish people living throughout the Diaspora, the opportunity to educate and reach a global audience with WikiGLAM is tremendous.

These opportunities to integrate Wikipedia into user engagement for cultural issues that focus social issues, genocide and contributions toward humanity are an endless source which must be contributed to with new perspectives in order to preserve and strengthen our global awareness and ultimately promote a more peaceful world. It is important to not only contribute this information but to create partnerships with other institutions to work together to re-examine their works and share this information with the global community I am a participating member in AAM's Council of American Jewish Museums and the opportunity to propose igniting WikiGLAM with these museums directly while at the upcoming Annual Meeting, March 3-5 while I am attending. Other possible online organizations for Jewish learning such as Center for Online Jewish Learning and Jewish Women's Archive are other potential resources for partnership for linking data and information. What I wish to contribute most to the OpenGLAM Launch is to present Jewish Art History as a fertile opportunity for engaging partnerships with existing institutions and others in higher social leaning for repairing the world through better understanding and the multitude of ways to engage people in games, education and institutions can be completely integrated into progressive life for all generations with Wikipedia as the most accessible primary global tool.

Goal and Expected Impact

[edit]

As a result of my participation and talk, I will be able to engage other participants in the OpenGLAM audience and further develop my ability to create partnerships with Jewish Museums including CJAM, as well as encyclopedic museums and other institutions to ignite them in forming partnerships and creating communities that would aid in contributing their valuable collections and data in this new context to be more accessible for others on Wikipedia. I wish to act as a spark to raise their understanding of the value and participation toward offering their collections and data on WikiGLAM and so I may offer the most valuable consultation, direction, strategies, innovation, research and site contributions for institutions and individual community groups whose interest are Jewish art history, cultural engagement, feminine perspectives in art. This will also reach communities interested in social change, genocide issues, diasporic and trans-global identity in the arts. The dynamic innovations and new direction that I will be exposed to at the OpenGLAM Launch will allow me to see new opportunities to create that make learning Jewish art history with Wikipedia fun, engaging and accessible in new visionary ways that would not happen independently without the support community in which you generously offer.
