Description of your participation[edit]

For a complete and multimedia description of Wikimedian activity during this event, see our community report in Portuguese.

One point that I set, I did not realize, because I realized that Iberocoof would not occur in Rio de Janeiro, there are many complications and São Paulo was better in resolving potential problems.

Wikimedia Brazil's relationship with other groups of free culture in Brazil is already strong, we find many companions in the event, and we discuss some projects that were stopped, or that they needed a new dress.

Most important ones
  • Circuito Fora do Eixo (FDE)

They are a peer network of thousands of artists, culture workers and agents throughout the whole country. Many are teachers or university students, opening up possibilities of working with educational projects. Moreover, as they are all over the country and working with culture, we can make partnerships for content aggregation Brazilian cultural to Wikimedia Movement.

Thanks to the event, we were invited to the Congresso Fora do Eixo, continuing the conversation we had, we managed to improve a project's Wiki FDE, and help in a workshop on Wiki, and now we were invited to an observatory at the end of the February (2012). Also raised was a project that would align with a program that is being built fellow, where volunteers would go around the country giving lectures and workshops empowering FDE points for using the Wiki. This project would align with the program of fellow who would go through the universities that WMBr has no penetration, there would be an advantage of the trip beyond the universities, the points FDE could enter the roadmap of the journey.

  • Recursos Educacionais Abertos (REA)

We had some discussions with the REA, and it is clear that there are several teachers who want to be authors, to create an educational resource better and free. We had some contact later, but still could not get time to launch the proposal to discuss, create programs of free collaborative work between students and teachers for an off-line version of Wikibooks, that would be distributed in schools that do not have Internet access.

  • Other things

I talked with some people that participates in the Amigos de Januaria, who develop a collaborative work of journalism, the work is interesting, but not all content is licensed under a free form.

We talked to several people who want to create a peer network of peer networks, ensuring the Wikimedia Brasil in this construction, we can join the group, and thus have more contacts with less expenditure of energy and more views that could not have alone.

There was also the collaborative construction of several posters to promote our activities in the event, was very interesting because the construction process draws more attention than the actual poster. We got some people to help us, and several others took pictures of the process and asked about the Wiki while we were constructing the posters.

We distribute the flyers on a massive scale, and the way in which the distribution was made there was no waste, I have not seen flyers dropped, or in the trash.

What lessons were learned that could help others in similar events?[edit]

Events at the end of the year are complicated, because the contact after the event is highly degraded. I wasted a lot of time trying to get back the contacts made.

Generate less waste material leaves it on a table, if the material is the quality people will catch, forcing them to pick up, making deliveries from hand to hand, makes much of this stuff is thrown away, leaving people to read before picking up also prevents it, so being near the seat is also good.

And in the event more people took the flyer with the objective of the Movement of the flyers on the quality of Wikipedia, it is quite possible that people care more about why we are doing than with the quality that we making.

It was great the event structure, but there was no interaction with the local public, despite being close to several people who used the park, then perhaps the public's interest in Rio is not so much for this type of event, disclosures about the movement to the public may fail.

Many conversations at the event is not borne fruit immediately. The conversations were better after the event and generated real activities, so it is best for the future, generate multiple contacts shallow, than trying to deepen the contact in the event.

What impact did your participation have on the Wikimedia Mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?[edit]

Contact with the FDE is improving, and we may have a greater penetration in the country because of this, ie, increasing the diversity of participants leaving the Rio-Sao Paulo. And we can also reduce the gender gap, for example, the Wiki workshop that was held had 100% female participation, and listening to the criticisms that we will reduce the usability problems, and increase in real numbers the number of girls using the MediaWiki.

If the project with the REA occurs, we can penetrate poor communities that previously had no access to educational resources, allowing to the Wikimedia Movement go into a portion of the population that could not reach before.
