Outcome[edit]

Option 1: Shared Experience: What is one way you shared something from your experience with your community (either locally or globally), after the event?
  1. I spoke on the phone with some members of my User Group about the new regional Wiki Scientific Photo Contest which was advanced in Wikimania with Sami Mlouhi.
Option 3: New Creation: What was one useful outcome that was created at the event for the Wikimedia movement?
Add a link to something new that was created as a result of your participation in this event (for example, you might link to a new tool that you and your co-participants worked on at the Hackathon, or to pages created in a workshop you participated in).
  1. Met Matti Blume and spoke about the Egyptian Scientific Photography Contest and agreed on him joining as a judge in the next local/regional round.
  2. Met Julia Kamin and now I am the AR liaison for CivilServant's Wikimedia studies.
  3. Agreed on starting a regional Wiki Science Photo Contest with Sami Mlouhi in the Arab meetup.
  4. Got in touch with Andrea from Argentina and we agreed on holding online editathons (part of Inter WikiWomen Collaboration) in Egypt & Argentina. We are now organizing it.
  5. After talking in Wikimania, I contacted Zachary McCune and his team and we are working on developing better designs for certificates given out as rewards in the activities we hold in Egypt.
  6. Got in touch with Sam Oyeyele in the African meetup and now we are doing AfroCine project.

Connections[edit]

  1. Worked closely with several Wikimedians and gave three presentations in collaboration with the WMF research team (slides & video), Netha Hussain (slides & video), and Anmol Wassan (slides).
  2. Finally met Michelle & Ceil from the Netherlands in person. I also promoted the unique Women Tech Storm event by talking about it in my presentations & talking to people about it.
  3. Had useful conversations during the Hackathon with Ludwig and learned how to use Zotero to get the Research Team’s paper feed and taught it to another Wikimedian at the conference.
  4. Had useful conversations with David Richfield and learned some basics of photo editing during the Hackathon. We applied this to a flag of a governorate in Egypt. My next project is to use this knowledge to improve the quality of the flags of governorates that exist on Commons. David also put me in contact with the author of Wiki flyers and I learned how to make the flyers translatable which will help me a lot in the workshops.
  5. Got in contact with Andrew Lih to participate in giving information about pictures on Commons.
  6. Spoke to Marshal Miller and put him in touch with community members to explore matters relevant to his research.
  7. Collaborated with Walaa Abdelmone’m to set the Egyptian table in the Community Village.
  8. Participated in the book swapping activity in the conference.

Anything else[edit]

  1. Gave an interview about Wikimedia branding for Zachary McCune and his team.
  2. Gave an interview to Die Zeit, a popular newspaper in Germany about Wikipedia and education. The article was the most read on that newspapers online portal at the time.
  3. Gave an interview to Milia Eidmouni from the Syrian Female Journalists Network about Wikipedia in Egypt & the Arab World.
  4. Participated in Wiki Women Lunch table and had great conversations with women from the Movement about our role and position.
  5. Participated in Black Lunch Table and got to have great conversations with people from around the world about African matters.
  6. I uploaded (number to be added) pictures to Commons. I still have more to upload but the connection I have is very poor; I already uploaded 100 pictures and they were all failed at the last step. I am retrying the uploads.
  7. Got in touch with Brigit and offered to help translating her edit conflicts tool into Arabic.
  8. Had fruitful conversations with Alex Stinson and learned about GalmOgran and Baglama and used the former here.
  9. Had a great conversation with Jackie Koerner about Wikipedia and education. It was really inspiring to learn more about the social boundaries and how they affect education in different contexts. This added to the insightful conversations with Netha Hussain about women and education in India added a lot of depth to the way I see Wiki activities in different places around the world which is bound to change how I go about international collaborations.
  10. Met Lindah Dabo in the African meetup and had eye-opening conversations about Africans and the place in Egypt in Africa. She sent me invaluable material too. She is a great person & friend. Talking with her about this topic was enriching since it is very controversial even in the Wiki community.
  11. Caught up with my friend Marc Miguel about his Wiki research.
  12. Had a conversation with Amir Aharoni about the Content Translation tool which I have been using for years now. It was a fruitful conversation about its features and suggested improvements.
  13. Had an informative and friendly conversation with Saskia Ehlers about her research.
  14. Met my friend Greta and made a new friend (Jona) and talked about Wiki in CEE and Albania.

This year Wikimania was such a great start for creative and innovative projects. I keep telling people the Wikimania is a learning curve, that’s why I am planning on making a Wikimania Guide that might help others take a short cut in the learning process.
