Proposed participation[edit]

I would like to present the approach of virtual collaborative learning using Wiki for adult ODL learners in the Asian Association Open Universities Conference (AAOU) 2014. My research paper entitled "Virtual Collaborative Learning Using Wiki for Adult ODL Learners" has been accepted for oral presentation to share study results and good practices during the annual conference of open and distance learning institutions.

The collaborative learning Wikis approach for Open Distance Learning (ODL) learners was carried out in Structured Programming course and Computer Networks course in School of Science and Technology (WOU) since July 2013 till July 2014 semester (present). The Wiki collaborative study conducted demonstrated that adult learners have shown positive perception towards moodle-wiki and the collaborative tool has significantly improve student’s learning performance by enhancing students' satisfactions and achieved courses learning outcomes at the end of each semesters.

Moodle-wiki, a wiki tool in Learning Management Systems (LMS) is introduced to the ODL students for contributing their ideas by adding, modifying and commenting a wiki in collaboration with peers. The ODL students engaged in the moodle-wiki study were assigned to control group and experimental group and were briefed about the collaborative tasks at the beginning of each semesters. Students were given extensive trainings for practical hands-on to understand how wiki works. The practical hands-on also enable students to familiarize themselves with each area of wiki before the actual experiment. This approach has brought positive engagement between student-instructor and student-student interactions at the end of the semesters. In addition, survey instruments based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were distributed to all ODL students to evaluate perceived ease of use (PE1-3) of moodle-Wiki and the learners have reflected favorable attitude towards using moodle-wiki.

I wish to also share the moodle-Wiki experiences in generating problem solving strategies among ODL learners and the challenges faced during the moodle-Wiki effort. The presentation of this study is hope to further demonstrate the benefits of moodle-Wiki in collaborative distance learning environment, raise awareness of collaborative environment specifically in Wiki environment and encourage ODL learners in contributing to other Wikis pages during the semester.

Goal and expected impact[edit]

Virtual collaborative learning is gaining in popularity in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) environment over the last decade. The moodle-Wikis approach aims to solve the major hurdle of pure ODL learning environment which lacks of instructor-learner interactions and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. The aim of this presentation is to promote the use of moodle-wiki as an effective supporting tool to enhance ODL students’ academic performances. On the other hand, I would like to share the demonstration and understanding of moodle-Wiki in learning management systems and explore opportunities of research collaboration with other participants from diverse institutions by introducing the moodle-Wikis initiative to various ODL institutions. In addition, this study provides guidelines to ODL practitioners for the implementation of moodle-Wiki teaching and learning methods to enhance students’ learning and improve the understanding of topics in ODL teaching and learning environment. Another important goal i will cover in my presentation is to encourage, build interest and offer mentor-ship in collaborative learning in moodle-Wiki within the academic community.
