Proposed participation

[edit]

I'm Eugene Alvin Villar (User:seav) and I am an active Wikimedian having been involved with the movement since 2002. I am currently the Chairman of Wikimedia Philippines and have been a board member since the chapter was founded. Aside from Wikimedia, I am also a long-time contributor to the OpenStreetMap project and I am actively involved with the local OSM community.

OpenStreetMap US is organizing the State of the Map US 2015 conference from June 6 to 8 at the UN Headquarters in New York City. I applied for a travel scholarship to attend the conference and submitted two presentations. Fortunately, my scholarship was approved as well as my two presentations. One of these is about the history and challenges of collaborations between the Wikimedia and OSM communities. This is the same presentation I gave at Wikimania 2014 in London, but will be updated and tailored to the OSM audience.

I am applying for additional funding from the TPS Grants program because the conference scholarship is for a fixed amount of $1,500. This will cover my travel and US visa fees but not accommodations and incidental expenses.

Goal and expected impact

[edit]

Aside from promoting further collaborations between Wikimedia and OSM through my presentation, I will also make the case for the OpenStreetMap community to embrace linking to and making use of Wikidata as a stable and community-supported source of structured open data. There is some skepticism regarding Wikidata in the OSM community and I hope to dispel any misinformation about Wikimedia's project. I hope that many in the OSM community will be encouraged to link to Wikidata from OSM in the same way that OSM is already linking to Wikipedia, and that some may even further start contributing to Wikidata or make use of Wikidata, both for making maps and for quality assurance in OSM.
