Communities Summer Festival 2014: 7 June 2014[edit]

Background[edit]

A big event to start Wikipedia:Rintis. Main goal is to introduce the concept of collaboration and community in Wikipedia as many of them didn't know that Wikipedia is written collaboratively by a community of volunteers. The event was open for all - we gave free ice cream and kites to participants. On the event, we held a seminar on Wikipedia and how to build a community from scratch.

Some difficulties arose both on the preparation and on the execution of the event. Mainly because our community is still not ready - several volunteers signed up to be the committee of the event, but only few actually shown up. With small number of Wikipedians, big commitment, and tight deadline, conflicts arose. Fortunately we can handle it - the conflict has no long term impact on the organization.

Result[edit]

  • Overexpected number of participants - Planned to be attended by 50 participants, but attended by at least 250 participants (based on the number of meal and ice cream consumed).
  • Recuring participants - Some participants come the next event, Ngewiki Berjamaah 2014.
  • Coverage by national mass media We didn't invite any mass media as we think the event will be small but a national media, NET TV, interviewed us and reported the event on one of their main program, Indonesia Morning Show. Link > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cidMsIKTR4&feature=youtu.be We also get coverage from many small medias.

Lesson learned[edit]

  • Make the community ready first - The community should be ready before holding a big event. Unlike paid employees, volunteers could leave in the middle of the project, make sure the team is bigger than required.
  • Consider RSVP attrition rate when you make a plan - From this event and our second event, we conclude that the attrition rate (# volunteers signed up as committee for the event : # volunteers actually shows up) is about 50%-60%. So the number of the team arranged should always be 2-3 times bigger than required.

Ngewiki Berjamaah 2014, 12-13 July 2014[edit]

  1. Our second event and second edit-a-thon
  2. 30++ signed up, 18 shown up. 12 are active users (6 of them are admins) and 6 new users. Six of them were also joined last year's Ngewiki Berjamaah. It's bigger than last year's event, although the number of participant is still under our expectation.
  3. On previous event, we found out that not everyone (even if she/he is a college student) able to translate English. So in this event we improved the method: we bought a mini-encyclopedia then we asked the participant to write articles using the book as reference.
  4. We wrote 104 articles in total, in a day.
  5. We held a follow up interviews on new users and found out that they are all happy with the event and plan to join other Wikipedia event in the future.

Lesson learned[edit]

  • New format of edit a thon - We learned from previous edit-a-thon that some of participants are not fluent in English so they have difficulties when translating Wikipedia articles. We implemented a new format of edit-a-thon: we bought an encyclopedia, we copied it so it can be easily shared to all participants, and asked participant to write the content of the encyclopedia to Wikipedia after we thought them how to do it. We only asked them to write the article in the simplest format, which contain at least one bolded word, one internal links, and one references. We think this format is effective and help the participants to remember the wiki markup quickly as they repeatedly using it in several articles. we successfully create 104 articles in one night.
  • New way to introduce Wikipedia - We no longer shows power point and statistic to introduce what Wikipedia is, but instead we tell a story about how Wikipedia sparks learning revolution and changes how human gather, read, and learn new information.
