Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, holds a significant position as an institution dedicated to shaping future educators in Nigeria. Recognizing the pivotal role of knowledge dissemination, this Wikimedia project aims to introduce Wikimedia projects to the college community, fostering a culture of collaborative content creation and open-access information.

The importance of this initiative lies in empowering both staff and students to actively contribute to the vast pool of knowledge available on Wikimedia projects. By providing Wikipedia training sessions, the project aims to equip participants with the skills to create and edit articles, enhancing their digital literacy and promoting the sharing of locally relevant information.

As an alumna of the college, I bring a unique understanding of the academic environment, coupled with personal connections to lecturers and students. Leveraging these relationships, the project will be tailored to suit the college's context, ensuring accessibility and simplicity. By engaging with the college community, we aspire to cultivate a vibrant Wikimedia presence, enriching the educational landscape and contributing to the global repository of shared knowledge.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Over a two-days event, the first day will be for trips of awareness and discussion with staff and students about Wikipedia and the second day we'll guide participants in creating Wikimedia accounts and using Wikipedia for research on day one. On that day, we'll dive into making Wikipedia better by enhancing articles, especially those about the college and the local community in both English and Hausa. Join us for two days of learning and contributing to Wikipedia!

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I am the member at Kano Wikimedians WhatsApp groups, I have informed the participants in it. I will also share via Hausa Wikimedians General WhatsApp Group.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

I have connections with both lecturers and students at the college. And they have graciously agreed to assist in organizing the project. Additionally, I am acquainted with students who are willing to promote the project among their peers and other participants through various channels, including WhatsApp groups. Communication with all involved parties will predominantly take place through WhatsApp and phone calls.
