Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • In a world of ceaseless connectivity, the resonance of poetry transcends borders, languages, and ideologies. This campaign is not merely an endeavor to populate digital platforms; it's an essential step toward cultural enrichment and global literary inclusivity. The project aims to bridge the gap in representation and recognition, a visionary campaign that seeks to transform the digital landscape of African poets on Wikidata. This campaign is aimed at spotlighting African poets on Wikidata, a pivotal step toward recognizing their contributions globally.Despite the wealth of poetic talent across Africa, many remarkable poets remain unnoticed on Wikidata, limiting their reach and impact. This project campaign seeks to address this oversight and ensure that these poets receive the recognition they deserve.

Wikipedia Nigeria can help illuminate the brilliance of African poets and ensure their stories resonate with audiences far and wide.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One editathon.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
I have informed the Nigeria Wikimedian User group about my project proposal Below is the link: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#Elevating_African_Poetic_Voices You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

In order to carry out the activities for creating articles on Wikidata, I plan to follow a structured approach. I will start by identifying notable subjects related to Nigeria that are currently missing from Wikidata. For instance, I might focus on prominent Nigerian authors. Then, I will research and gather relevant information about these subjects, including biographical details, achievements, and sources.

To promote my campaign, I will utilize various media and platforms. One effective strategy could involve leveraging social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I'll create engaging posts showcasing the importance of accurate and comprehensive representation of Nigerian topics on Wikidata. For example, I might share intriguing facts about Nigerian writers whose articles are absent from Wikidata, encouraging users to join the effort.

Additionally, I plan to collaborate with existing Nigerian Wikipedia editors and engage with relevant online communities, such as forums or groups dedicated to Nigerian culture and history. By fostering partnerships and spreading the word through targeted outreach, I aim to raise awareness and garner support for the initiative to enrich Wikidata with valuable Nigerian content.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof availablity
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:oyedepo Joshua

User:Akintundedaniel

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The main focus participants are literary communites in the state such as Writer's communities, poetry clubs. To assist participants without editing expertise or equipment, we'll organize training sessions, offer mentorship, provide accessible online guides and regular feedback will ensure high-quality contributions to Wikidata. This ensures everyone can contribute effectively and confidently.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

To maintain engagement post-project, We'll provide updates especially to draw the interest of new participants, encourage collaboration, host virtual meetups, offer recognition, and set challenges to sustain participants' involvement on Wikidata and become an active member of the Wikipedia Nigeria forum.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Bridging the Gap: Address the significant underrepresentation of African poets on Wikidata, ensuring their rightful place in the digital literary sphere. An Increased visibility leading to wider recognition of African poets on a global scale, amplifying their resonance and impact on global literary conversations.
