  • To address the growing need of librarians in Lagos State to acquire essential skills for using Wikipedia and Wikidata as powerful tools for knowledge management, information dissemination, and community engagement, this project will train librarians on how to use these tools.

  2. Contribute to Wikipedia and Wikidata by adding or improving content
  3. Increasing the number of librarians who join Wikipedia community

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? There will be one physical trainings and four online trainings.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have announced the Wikimedia Nigeria user group about the project on their Meta page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria and the WhatsApp group of the Nigerian Library Association.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

There are 95 professional librarians in the Lagos WikiGlam WhatsApp group. We will also use social media to send out messages.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, they do.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

They will be engaged through social media, SMS, and phone calls. Additionally, we have a group on WhatsApp for the community.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The goal of this project is to build a network of librarians in Lagos state to increase their participation in Wikipedia and other sister projects to increase information literacy and bridge the knowledge gap. By equipping librarians, this project is a step in that direction.
