Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) is an annual international photographic competition held throughout May and July, organized worldwide by Wikimedia chapters, groups, and local Wikipedia volunteers. Participants take pictures of local natural heritage and scenic landscapes in their countries and upload them to Wikimedia Commons.

The basic aim of the competition is to collect photos of natural heritage sites – such as nature reserves, landscape conservation areas, national parks, scenic/landscape areas, remarkable gardens, etc. – to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects.

  1. recruit new editors
  2. Capacity building
  3. Submitting photos of nature to Wikimedia Commons to be used on Wikimedia projects.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

  • Pre Photowalk Event: - This will involve gathering volunteer photographers (both experienced and novice) virtually and training them about Wikimedia and the mission, basic photography ethics and how to capture good and quality images.
  • Photowalk: - Taking volunteer photographers out to different locations within Abuja to capture images related to nature to upload to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Post Photowalk Event: - Volunteer photographers will come together after the photowalk to learn how to edit images (Using mobile phones and PC) to improve the image quality before uploading to Wikimedia commons and also learn how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Yes, the WUGN Abuja network is aware of this proposal. And it’s leadership is actively supporting my implementation of the project.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings. Social media channels (WhatsApp group, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram) and mailing list.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants have their Digital cameras, smartphones, tablets and laptops for capturing and editing images, relevant trainings will be provided to build their skills.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will reach out to them and engage them on our WhatsApp platform to guide them through the process where necessary.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

  • Ogalihillary will keep communication active to keep everyone informed and will also manage logistics with regards to the trainings and photowalk.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Transportation to the Photowalk locations - N75,000
  • Refreshment for two in-person events - N100,000 (N4000 each for 25 participants, for two physical events).
  • T- shirt for 25 participants for photowalk - N125,000 (N5000 each)
  • Top 3 prizes - N60,000
  • Miscellaneous (data for 2 physical events) - N40,000

Total - N400,000

  • We are receiving in-kind donations from Girls Voices Initiative to use its space for our convening.

As the Coordinator of the WUGN Abuja Network, I, *Carolynseaman, hereby endorse this project proposal having identified *Ogalihillary as an active member of the WUGN Abuja Network and capable to lead this project implementation within our network. *Ogalihillary possesses commendable experience leading Wiki projects including the Wiki Loves Africa project and I trust he can successfully lead this project to achieve the proposed objectives and outcomes. This endorsement is also in keeping with the mission of the WUGN Abuja Network leadership to mentor young leaders within the network to lead projects and eventually take over the leadership of the Network. We would actively support the implementation of the project.
