Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikimedia Anambra Network/Campus Outreach at Federal Polytechnic Oko

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal. The notion of outreach and expansion of Wikimedia necessitates the need to include the academic communities in the open knowledge and sharing of information. Hence, the fact that English Wikimedia has no presence in any of the tertiary institutions in Anambra State draws attention to stamping its roots in Federal Polytechnic Oko. This is a learning ground with lots of students and staff who need to contribute and participate in the Wikimedia spaces. The number of youths in the academic sector with different backgrounds in disciplines indicates the expectation of bringing to Wikimedia vast knowledge on different subjects, cultural heritage, and new learning. With the youths building their digital skills and taking center stage in development, this project presents the ideal plan and spaces to explore the Polytechnic and include the members of the academic community in the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria;

This is a Wikipedia Project which aims to build on the previous awareness program on community-initiate of the Wikimedia Anambra Network. The Network visited Federal Polytechnic Oko in June 2023 to start the process of formalizing Wikimedia projects on the campus. It will involve an in-person event at the Polytechnic and a virtual session to ensure comprehensive learning and follow-up. The experienced members of the Network will travel to Oko for the outreach. Federal Polytechnic, Oko is situated in the Anambra South Senatorial district which is some distance from Awka, the home-based of the Network. So the Team will leave early in the morning for the outreach for a meaningful engagement before heading back to town. Then, the virtual session will be taken up to internalize the learning while edit-a-thon will follow at the end of the training

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

There will be one in-person training and one virtual training for more comprehensive learning

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The stakeholders and the members of the Network are aware of the engagement in Federal Polytechnic Oko. They were carried along during the first engagement in June. They know about this new development and are happy about the progress of the Network.

Again, we have our social media platform where we reported and splashed photos of our visit to the Polytechnic in June. Once this sails through, we will go online again and give it more visibility

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The in-person and the virtual training will be spaces for communication. The flier, social media platforms, and the general platform where the new editors will be added will carry the communication. It will also be included in the on-wiki spaces. There will be meta page and dashboard which will carry full information

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Ngostary2k
User:Timzy D'Great
User:Akwugo
User:Obuezie

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The participants have smartphones and other devices that enable digital training and activities

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

There will be continuous follow-up on WhatsApp and over-the-phone apps. Besides, a platform will be created for the training while they will be added to the larger group of Wikimedia Anambra Network.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This grant is a follow-up of the efforts made by Wikimedia Anambra Network on June 2023 in including the campuses in Anambra state under Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. They now have an idea of what Wikimedia is but do not have the skills to work in its space. This is a good idea to go all out with outreach and training. I am afraid that if we delay, another user group will go and revel in the efforts we have started.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: One in-person and one virtual training
  2. Number of participants: 45
  3. Number of new editors: 30
  4. Number of articles created or improved: 200
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 30

How do you plan to track your project metrics? The outreach dashboard will be used to track the metrics which will last for two weeks

Strong support Strong support Goodymeraj (talk) 02:36, 17 July 2023 (UTC) The popular saying that, "the more the merrier" holds sway even for Wikimedia Foundation. More hands are needed to add more color to the Wikimedia Projects as more youths need to come on board with their ideas, contributions, skills And energy. Thus, the need for the Wikimedia message to be taken to tertiary institutions within and around Anambra State, starting with Federal Polytechnic Oko. An earlier awareness had been created, so this Wikipedia and Wikidata training will build on that. I am so pleased with the idea as this will be the first of it's kind and so I add my endorsement.

Strong support Strong support Ennydavids (talk) I strongly endorse the program

Strong support Strong support I strongly support this project for two reasons;

1. The Federal Polytechnic, Oko is strategically placed in Anambra South Senatorial zone and getting Wikimedia activities ongoing there can bring in new editors from Orumba South, Orumba North and Aguata LGAs who will open up knowledge about those areas.

2. The institution has a large student population and interested staff members. Exploratory meetings held with them indicate that they are willing to learn and open up knowledge. Most importantly, they want to understand how being a Wikimedian ties in with 21st century digital skills, information literacy, and user ethics in online spaces. I look forward to the vibrancy that students and staff of Federal Polytechnic Oko will add to the Anambra Wikimedia Network.
