Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikimedia Awareness for Corps Members in Kaiama, Kwara State

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • Kaiama is a town located in Kwara North. It is also the headquarter of Kaiama Local Government in Kwara State, Nigeria. Being a corps member serving currently in this town for months, it is evident that my fellow corps members, do not have proper digital literacy skills, do not even know what it takes to contribute to Wikipedia, and do not they can also be an editor or contributor of Wikipedia.

Several times I put on merch(the T-shirts I received from winning organized contests that I have participated in) I get questions from different corps members asking me how I contribute to Wikipedia, and they do not even know that contributors of Wikipedia are fellow human beings like them. I have to talk to them and walk them through. This has motivated and given me reasons to create an avenue and writing this to seek for gatherings where all corps members will be in one place, to deep dive, engage them on what Wikipedia is and how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Also, to create awareness that there are other Wikipedia sister projects like Wikidata.

This project is targeted at the widespread effective use of Wikipedia and its sister projects among the corps members of Kaiama. By introducing Wikipedia to them, we aim to empower and train the corps members in Kaiama with the tools and skills necessary to access, contribute, and utilize this vast knowledge repository. Also,By leveraging the power of Wikipedia, we can bridge the information gap and empower the corp members to become active contributors to the world's collective knowledge.

One physical training with edit-a-thon that will span for three weeks.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. I have informed the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community via their discussion page, explaining the goals and objectives of this project on the link here

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Our target participants are corps members interested in expanding their knowledge and making a positive impact.

Awareness: Prior to the event we will be distributing E fliers to the designated social media platform of Kaiama Corpers to generate interest and awareness about the upcoming event .We will create a WhatsApp group for the interested participants and pass out regular information as regards the commencement of the event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

Akintundedaniel

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, every corps member has smartphone that makes them to participate and make contributions during the training. They will be trained in the course of the awareness on how to make high quality contributions.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Since there will be a WhatsApp group that will be created during the course of training. There will be constant passing of information after the training, we will keep the participants informed on opportunities, and also follow up on making sure they keep on making quality contributions to Wikipedia and also its sister projects.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will go a long way in creating awareness to the corps members, they will also have opportunity of being digital literate that makes them contribute to Wikipedia:the free encyclopedia.

Corps members serving here in Kaiama are from different states, having knowledge of Wikipedia will make them take this knowledge to their respective states after they are done serving here, making Wikipedia reach broader communities which is one of the goals of making sure information is available and accessible to anybody regardless of background, class without discrimination.
