Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual Wikipedia international photographic competition to contribute images to the cultural, historical, or scientific significance within the neighborhood. This proposal will provide resources that will enable the participation of Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ibadan Wikipedia editors in the 2023 Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will visit 5 tourist/cultural centres;

  • Bower Memorial Tower
  • National museum of unity lbadan
  • Irefin Palace.

  1. Create awareness about the Wiki Loves Monuments and its activities
  2. Engage existing editors to contribute to Commons
  3. Recruit new editors and train them on on uploading to Wikicommons

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One Photowalk to selected tourist centres in Oyo state
One upload session

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The project will be announced on WUGN group chat and Wikimedia Fan Club, UI page. It will be equally shared across the club's social media channels (Twitter and Facebook)

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, participants have good mobile phones that will be used to take photos at the cultural centres.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will do a follow-up with participants on a group chat that will be created for the project purpose, for the new editors they will be added to the club's group chat for prompt update about the Wikimedia movement in Nigeria. We will provide them with tips on creating, and editing Wikicommons.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

  • This contest is an opportunity to contribute high quality images of these Nigeria Monuments, that will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons for free usage.
  • It will help increase the awareness and participation of the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ibadan who are still very new to the various projects on Wikimedia.
  • At the upload session, editors will be trained on how to use of the media files uploaded on Wikipedia articles.
  • Wikipedia articles will be created for monuments visited who lacks Wikipedia articles.

A dashboard will be created to track the uploads and edits.

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Mobile phones for photos and uploads, Laptops and resource guides for the trainings.
