Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria/Anambra Network/ Reclaiming the rights to quality information with 1Lib1Ref

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The globally involved campaign of #1Lib1Ref is commemorated annually to remind us of the importance of ensuring quality information via the free knowledge space with accurate and verifiable sources. The campaign focuses on building an empire of quality contributors while learning and adding value to existing articles in Wikipedia. It amplifies the underrepresented voices through organic story telling and integration of same to other sister projects. This is a good and promising opportunity for Wikimedia Anambra Network to join in the world campaign of adding references to articles while improving the authenticity of sources in existing articles. This project will undoubtedly add value to information in the free knowledge spaces and make Wikimedia resources more credible.

This is a Wikimedia activity and will combine physical and follow up online training. The Wikimedia Anambra Network is majorly a community of librarians and students in the academic communities. It is then necessary that they use the #1Lib1Ref opportunity to nurture more volunteers for Wikimedia as they learn the basics and improve their editing skills. The participants will be taught to sign up in the meta and join the dashboard. The training will include how to create, improve articles with authentic sources, upload pictures to Wikicomons and link data. There will be edit-a-thon that will last for two weeks with prizes given to the editors that have more contributions.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

There will be one edit-a-thon. But training will come first on how to create and improve articles as well as adding references. There will also be a follow up online to encourage and clarify some challenges that may come up during the edit-a-thon. The edit-a-thon will last for two weeks

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The Anambra Network has an active WhatsApp platform for regular communication and updates. There is also our very active twitter page (@WikiAnambraNtWk)for dissemination and sharing. It will be in the meta and will also be posted in sister community platforms for wider sharing and notification.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We have our WhatsApp platforms. We also use our mails, messages and twitter.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The participants have smart phones and laptops and other smart electronic devices. They also have ICT and information literacy skills.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Our WhatsApp platform is “Live.” There will be addition of new editors after every event with follow ups of continuous editing and upcoming contributions.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is a project that is critical for members of the academic community because of their roles in learning and research. This project will be a good booster in their academic activities in sharing information. This project will be most welcomed in May, 2024 to synchronize with the globally acceptable month of the campaign.
