Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikimedians Gombe Connect Campaign

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • Gombe State has experienced significant growth and engagement in the Wikimedia movement. Currently, we have a user base of over 200 individuals, with around 50 actively involved. This success can be attributed to the effective promotion campaigns conducted in the region, including the recent Wikipedia Awareness campaign in Akko (https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Awareness_In_Akko), which I had the privilege of leading. The campaign targeted 50 youths from Akko Local Government in Gombe State. Despite the evident recognition of the relevance of Wikimedia projects in the state, a large number of users remain unaware of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, the umbrella organization encompassing all editors and Wikimedia projects in Nigeria. Therefore, it has become crucial to organize a connect event that will bring editors together to raise awareness about the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and its impact. Additionally, this event aims to facilitate networking among editors involved in different projects, fostering the growth of the Gombe Wikimedia Community. Moreover, it seeks to generate enthusiasm and support for the proposed Wikimedia Fan Club, Gombe State University. Given the university's central location and significance, the club will serve as a platform and medium for various activities and projects, ensuring continuous collaboration among editors in the state. The Wikimedians Gombe Connect Campaign will not only promote awareness of Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons but also encourage participants to provide post-event feedback through surveys. This will aid in further improving the campaigns and ensuring their success.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? Training and Editathon

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Yes, I will share the link on social media platforms, targeting specific communities and raising awareness among the Wikimedia user group Nigeriaand the Hausa Wikimedia Users Group. I will primarily utilize WhatsApp, as it is where the participants and target groups are most active.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

There are already active WhatsApp groups within the community, along with several ongoing projects in the state. These groups are highly active, which makes it convenient for us to engage with the participants and utilize them effectively.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:Kaizenify

We have a team of highly active and experienced editors who will lead the training. In addition to the five volunteers who will be part of the team, there are three core team members who play vital roles:

1.User:Usmanagm: He is the project lead and will oversee the successful planning and execution of the project.

2.User:Gwanki: He has been actively involved in the growth of activities and movements within the Gombe Wikimedia Community. He has participated in all the trainings we organized, making him well-equipped to serve as a facilitator for online sessions and share insights on the impact of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.

3.User:SadiqY56: He is an experienced Wikimedia editor, a skilled orator, and a strategic thinker. He will be responsible for hosting both online and offline sessions and facilitating discussions during the training. This comprehensive approach will ensure effective outreach, engagement, and knowledge sharing within the community. 5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, they do.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

There is a proposed Wikimedia Fan Club at Gombe State University, and the participants will have the opportunity to join once it is formed. The university's strategic position and location make it capable of reaching all editors in the state. Additionally, a central WhatsApp group will be created to facilitate ongoing communication. Furthermore, we will conduct surveys to gather post-event feedback and ensure continuous improvement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events 2
  2. Number of participants 30
  3. Number of new editors 5
  4. Number of of articles created or improved 100
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) 10

Metrics tracking[edit]

How do you plan to track your project metrics? To effectively track project metrics, we will implement a comprehensive approach that includes the creation of a dedicated dashboard. This dashboard will serve as a centralized platform to monitor and analyze participants' contributions throughout the project. By utilizing the dashboard, we can keep a close eye on various metrics such as the number of articles edited, the number of new articles created, the quality of edits, and the overall engagement of participants.

The dashboard will provide real-time updates and visualizations, enabling us to easily track the progress of individual participants as well as the collective impact of the project. It will help us identify areas that require additional support or intervention, allowing us to address any challenges or bottlenecks promptly.

The dashboard will allow us to generate comprehensive reports on project metrics. These reports will provide insights into the overall performance and achievements of the project, making it easier to evaluate its success and identify areas for improvement. By regularly reviewing the metrics and analyzing the data, we can make informed decisions, refine our strategies, and ensure the project's effectiveness.
