Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • After the Wikimedia Ibani campaign was held last May 2024, it created a lot of impact and interest in reviving the Ibani language in Bonny Kindgom and to begin a language documentation programme on Wikipedia. The need for a follow-up meeting is requested to encourage our newly discovered editors and reach those you indicated interest but missed the event. This is why the second edition has become imperative. This is to expand the scope of the project. Below was the objective of the campaign last month. The project is targeted at laying a solid foundation for the widespread use and adoption of Wikipedia editors in Nigeria and also bridging the content gap about Nigeria's local indigenous cultures, arts, and cuisines which contains little to no content on Wikipedia and thus enhancing the need for these areas to be greatly improved. We especially, hope to increase awareness of Wikipedia programmes within the Ibani Language Community and encourage wider participation and contribution from the community. The ibani language is spoken by the Bonny and Opobo Kingdoms spread across two Local Government Areas in Rivers State of Nigeria – The Bonny Local Government Area and the Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area. The Ibani Language is an endangered language and we hope to support its revival with Wikipedia projects. Through this project, we hope to engage and train new and existing Wikimedia editors to enable them to become experienced editors, acquire basic editing and researching skills that will enable them create new articles and improve existing articles by adding more categories about the Ijaw's indigenous culture's and prominent people on Wikipedia

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One physical, one virtual training, and Edit a thon contest
During the first edition of the Wikimedia Ibani campaign, we only held a physical event at the beginning of the camoaign and no contest. We are going to be adding a virtual training session for the follow-up edition to be facilitated by Mr. Medi, as this will also help the team to follow up with the progress of each participant
The participants will be physically present at a training center and contribute to the different aspects of Wikipedia and how to improve articles.
The virtual training will be to provide support and help for participants that face challenges during editing a thon and also online training for participants who couldn’t join the physical training session.
Edit a thon contest: This is for the participants to contribute to Wikipedia after the training, and the top participants will be awarded prizes for actively contributing.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the wikimedia Nigeria about my application via the meta page.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

To inform both new and existing Wikimedian editors we will sharing and distributing E flyers to the designated platform of target participants as this will serve as a forum to generate interest in the event, this will also offer a comprehensive way to reach our target audience. Additionally, this will enable us to create a Whatsapp group for those who generate interest in the upcoming event. Adequate information will be passed through the created whatsapp group to inform, remind, and give regular updates about the commencement of the event. Other channels of publicity include our community social media pages.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

user:SuperSwift

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, the participants have the required skills and equipment, which include Mobile phones and laptops to enable them to make and contribute effectively and efficiently on Wikimedia platforms. The physical event will be held at the Community Data Center ensuring participants have access to personal computers during the training. Ongoing support will continue in our dedicated Whatsapp groups.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

After the Event: we will be working to ensure sustainability of the participants by having them join as community members of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria as this will keep them posted and foster participation in other and wiki events. Our Language Group - https://web.facebook.com/groups/100730196680313 of over 13,000 members and almost 7,000 participants monthly will serve to effectively promote Wikipedia programmes and the progress of the campaign within the community Additionally, participants will be added to our existing Whatsapp group for follow-up and ongoing support. We will conduct a post event survey to identify areas for improvement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Our desire is to build an effective Wikipedia editorial community for the Ibani Language group and the Bonny and Opobo Kingdoms. We believe and hope that our participation will add real value to the Wikipedia Projects and to our people as well.
