Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

Wikipedia pages wanting photos is a Campaign aimed to promote the use of digital media files collected via various advocacy programs, photowalks, GLAM projects and contests including international photography contests organized by the global community.

Wikimedia Commons has more than 40 millions multimedia files, which the majority are photographs. Right now, only a small portion of those are used to illustrate Wikipedia articles. Adding pictures to Wikipedia is a great way to contribute to the free encyclopedia, making the articles better for all readers

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Physical training: The Wikipedia pages wanting photos is a global campaign that is focused on improving and bridging picture gaps on Wikipedia articles. We will be having one physical training to train participants on how to add photos from wikimedia commons to Wikipedia pages appropriately. Our goal is that participants can bridge photo gaps on Wikipedia. The physical training is also an avenue to train participants on wikimedia commons and how to make proper use of the photo on this wiki sister project and how they link to each other.

The physical event will also create awareness for new participants about the campaign and the wikimedia project.

Edit-a-thon contest:After the physical event there will be a local contest that will foster the engagement and participation of the participants. The edit a thon contest will also will help us know what the participants have learnt during the training and also for the to join the global contest. Prizes will be awarded to top contributors, to encourage the to contribute to the wikimedia movement

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the wikimedia user group Nigeria community and the Unilorin fan club about my proposal.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

creating awareness: we will be creating awareness about the campaign though the use of e-fliers and publicity to inform participants about the campaign.

On-wiki space: we will be sharing information about the campaign on the fan club social media platform to inform its participants and community members about the campaign

Social media: we will also be using our social media channels to promote the campaigns for participants online to contribute and join the campaign. The global campaign will also be included in our publication.

Creating WhatsApp platform: this platform is a direct message platform for all the participants of the campaign. Here will keep them informed and updated about our plans and activities for the success of the campaign.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Our participants have internet connectable devices to enable them communicate and contribute effectively during the campaign like smartphones, laptops and tablet etc

We will support them by providing them with the appropriate training and support to enable them contribute effectively.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Our group will after the campaign focus on wiki related articles and give out participants the opportunity to get involved with other wikimedia projects and campaigns to make become active contributors.

We will also help them be full participating members of the wikimedia user group Nigeria, participants from the fan club will also be encouraged to participate in future campaigns

Also they will be part of the global campaign and contest for global prizes.
