Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Women in Red (Nigeria)

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The Women in Red aims to address the significant gender disparity on Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikipedia, by highlighting and documenting the achievements, stories, and contributions of women.

Despite Nigeria's rich history and the pivotal roles women have played in its development, there's a noticeable underrepresentation of Nigerian women on Wikimedia projects. This project recognizes the importance of gender equality in knowledge dissemination and aims to rectify this imbalance by creating and improving articles that spotlight notable Nigerian women on Wikiquote.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

A physical training session and an edit-a-thon, complemented by an online contest. This event will be conducted in a structured environment, where participants will receive guidance from experienced volunteer facilitators. Utilizing effective teaching tools such as projectors, slides, and Wikiquote resources, attendees will learn basic editing techniques, information retrieval on Wikiquote, proofreading, and article enhancement. This aims to significantly increase the representation of notable Nigerian women on Wikiquote. Additionally, an edit-a-thon session will be held, during which I and my team will offer mentorship to participants, enhancing their skills as Wikiquote editors.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community via their discussion page, explaining the goals and objective of this project on the link here[1]

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The intended audience comprises young individuals, students, and existing Wikimedian editors. To raise awareness, we plan to share E flyers on specified platforms, serving as a means to engage both new and existing Wikimedian editors. This initiative aims to spark interest, establish a WhatsApp group for interested individuals, and ensure timely updates and reminders are communicated through the group regarding the upcoming event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Ebubechukwu1

User:Janebecky001

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, the participants possess the necessary skills and equipment, such as mobile phones and laptops, to actively and efficiently contribute to Wikiquote.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Following the event, we aim to ensure the participants' sustainability by inviting them to become community members of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. This will keep them informed and encourage their involvement in future wiki-related activities. Moreover, participants will be included in a WhatsApp group for continued support and follow-up. We will also administer a post-event survey to pinpoint areas that require enhancement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This proposal aims to address the gender gap by enhancing and creating articles about Nigerian women across different fields and documenting their quotes on Wikiquote. By making these quotes widely accessible, we align with the goals of knowledge equity as advocated by the Wikimedia movement strategies. We are dedicated to fostering a safe, supportive, and fair environment for all participants, strictly adhering to the Wikimedia Universal Code of Conduct (UCOC) and the friendly space policy.
