Report accepted[edit]

Hi Léonie Butler, MMelvaer and the entire team. Thank you for this detailed report as well as for all your efforts to organize this project! It's always a joy to read about the different events, as well as your approaches and questions you're focusing on. I really appreciated the section on "Progress towards targets and goals" as it's interesting to see how your focus is changing and deepening over the years. Some of the other questions you raised that resonated include:

  • How does this diversity of voices influence the network of subjects represented?
  • Can it help to develop intersectional approaches and go beyond biases inherited from a long history of writing knowledge?
  • Who is remembered and what shapes our perception of society before and now?
  • How do we keep traces of the voices that are so often silenced because they don't fit within existing frameworks?
  • What are ways to decolonize views on source credibility?

As our Community Resources team, WMF, and the movement more broadly spend the next year (and years) thinking about how to more closely align our work around Knowledge Equity, these questions are essential for us to grapple with. I imagine we will be reaching out to you over the next few months to get more insight to your work and how you're thinking about these issues.

I appreciate that you have a balance between editing and discussion and being able to remain flexible depending on the group. It's important to have a direct impact on the Wikimedia projects, but it's also very important to make space to unpack these complicated issues and build a community of practice around this work.

Thank you for articulating that "It is important to us that the subjects we chose to work with are close to our hearts, that is sparks curiosity and makes us want to put in the work it takes to research it with an open mind, without getting too focused on a specific end result. Flexibility around subjects and format is an important factor to keep the work interesting for us." Now that you have been doing this project for several years, I'm curious to know how you're thinking about sustainability in terms of both people and funding.

Thank you again for all your work! Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 02:04, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
