Follow-up Questions on Grant Application[edit]

Hello リブリ, thank you for putting in a grant application and for providing further clarifications. We are capturing the key questions and your responses here as well for learning and sharing with the wider community.

Note: The questions were posed by ESEAP Senior Programme Officer and responses were provided by リブリ and 海獺.

1) Could you provide more information on how your project will address the content gender gap? (Context: gender gap was mentioned in questions 4 and 6 of your application; Gender gap, Japan ranked 121/153 countries)

リブリ and 海獺 response

I have participated in WikiGap 3 times so far. At the two WikiGap events in Tokyo, I worked as a staff member of the organizer in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden, giving lectures on Wikipedia and serving as a facilitator.

In 2019 I organized the WikiGap in Fukuoka.

Fukuoka has historically had a significant gender gap compared to other parts of Japan, so I felt it was very important to organize a WikiGap in the city.

I have already been involved with WikiGap since before Covid, so I will be sure to include an introduction to WikiGap in my lectures at the six events I plan to hold in Fukuoka, and I hope that Wikipedia can be a tool to help bridge the gender gap, and that it will provide an opportunity to think about the gender gap.

2) Could you share more about the Wikimedia community in Fukuoka? For example: observations, trends and understanding of the community composition, needs and interests, key stakeholders of the Fukuoka Wikimedia community.

Six events are scheduled in Fukuoka.

1.Kurume Institute of Technology will give a lecture to university students on "media literacy, Wikipedia's philosophy, editorial policy, editing methods, how to collect and handle source materials," and a workshop on adding sources to existing texts on Wikipedia is planned.

The lecturer will be Hisami Iwase, who is a lecturer at this university.

2. Meihokan High School Hakata SNEC.

SNEC is an acronym for Special Needs Education Center, an educational institution with a flexible educational system for "developmentally-challenged students.

The most frequent reference for students is Wikipedia, which they use very well, but it is regrettable that students do not take the credibility of the information more seriously at this time.

The theme of the lecture will be the affinity between inquiry-based learning and Wikipedia.

The lecturer is Mika Okamoto, who is a support person at this school.

3.Wikipedia Town, held at the Genyo Community Center, is a Wikipedia editathon.

Participants are a group of people researching the history of the area, and the event is designed to document local information on Wikipedia using the local library.

Hisami Iwase is in charge of this event.

4. BIZCOLI is a specialized library located in Fukuoka.

https://www.bizcoli.jp/

It is operated by the Kyushu Economic Research Center.

Librarians and others from specialized libraries are expected to attend this event to explain Wikipedia to specialized librarians and encourage them to hold future editathons in the Kyushu area.

The Kyushu Economic Research Center and Maruzen Yushodo are in charge of this event.

5. The West Japan Academy for Library event is primarily for librarians and others in public libraries, and will begin with an overview of Wikipedia and how to organize a Wikipedia editathon, so that future Wikipedia editathons will be held. The West Japan Academy for Library and Maruzen Yushodo are in charge of this event.

6. The event at Kitakyushu Science and Research Park, titled "Information Literacy with Wikipedia," will explain how Wikipedia works, how it is used, and how the reliability of its content is ensured, inviting a wide range of participants from the general public to students. The content of the event is designed to promote understanding of Wikipedia itself and encourage people to try editing it.

The Kitakyushu Science and Research Park and Maruzen Yushodo will be in charge of this event.

3) Your proposed project reaches out to a wide range of audiences across age demographics from high school/ university students to senior citizens. Could you share more about you/ your team's past experience in working with young people (say aged 15-24 years old) as well as young people with special needs? Here are youth safety policies / guidelines for reference for events with young people's participation. Could you have a look and let us know which ones you'll be able to adopt? Or if these are not applicable, please feel free to share local guidelines or measures you plan to take for our reference.

The local adult is 18 years old; all of our (my) projects for young people aged 15-22 are in schools/universities. Teachers are always present when the event is held at the school, as they are in regular classes.

4) Could you share about your process of identifying partners for your activities? We would love to also understand more about your approach to establishing partnerships with different groups or organisations. This will be useful learning for the wider ESEAP community.

海獺 response

I have been a Wikipedian since 2006, an administrator since 2007, and a CheckUser since 2008.

After I stopped being an administrator, I started to explain what Wikipedia is externally.

https://w.wiki/3ya

I have used social networking sites (Twitter and Facebook) to connect with people in libraries and to build close relationships with people in GLAM.

We have also appeared several times on TV as Wikipedians and have worked to increase the number of editors as much as possible.

As a Wikipedian "海獺" I have been able to build relationships with many people.

librarians, directors,University officials, including Professor Kitamura of Musashino University, Professor Noguchi of Senshu University, Professors Matsuda and Imai of Takushoku University, Professor Nakamata of Kagawa Junior College, and Professor Hinata of Tsuru Bunka University, to name a few.

I would like to actively promote Wikipedia in the GLAM community and in the media, as I believe there is a good future for libraries, for Wikipedia, and for the individuals who edit it, if Wikipedians spread the word about the role of libraries and their affinity for Wikipedia.

The same goes for schools and universities, with the idea that through Wikipedia we can deepen our understanding of the transmission and dissemination of information. JChen (WMF) (talk) 02:46, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Useful references for your grant application[edit]

In your application, I also noticed you may need support with:

Question 18: What tools would you use to measure each metric selected? Please refer to the guide for a list of tools. You can also write that you are not sure and need support.

Question 14: In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

  • You can find out more through the rapid fund guide at question 14.
  • Based on my understanding of your project, yours likely applies to a) identify topics of impact and b) innovate in free knowledge
