Follow-up Questions from Pre-screening - Programme Officer[edit]

Hello @Onyaso,

Thank you for taking time to put in your grant application.

We hope you can assist us to provide more context to your grant. Here are some questions from the pre-screening process.

Thank you for taking time to respond.

Regards, Jacqueline

---

1) Could you provide your timeline document in excel form and make the link accessible?

2) Could you provide more information about your (and your team's) background and how you are/were involved with the Wikimedia movement?

3) Would it be possible to share about your team's past experiences and interactions working on community projects with the Orang Rimba community? If you have other online resources to point us to, please feel free to share them with us.

4) As your grant is linked to an organisation, would it be possible to share your past experiences in managing grants of similar size and partners that you have worked with? If you have links to previous project/ grant reports available online, could you share them with us?

5) Would it be possible to share a short description of your local context. This is useful in supporting the regional funds committee to better understand yours/ your community's operating context/ lived realities.

Thank you.

Thank you for your questions and review of my application. Here are some points of explanation from us.

1. Sure, below is a link to the activity timeline

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D7TZQnfDJC2oXPsFxVJMpxhR_lYAUSarUsyg0EY6Mxk/edit?usp=sharing
2. I have contributed to Wikimedia projects since 2018, specifically Minangkabau Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Minangkabau Wiktionary. In the community, I was a contact person for the Wikimedia Padang community in 2019-2020. I once won a children's story writing competition on Wikibuku Indonesia which was held by Wikimedia Indonesia. Currently I am volunteering at an informal educational institution for Orang Rimba at PKBM Bunga Kembang with YohanaMarpaung. Yohana is a teacher at PKBM Bunga Kembang who will help me carry out the project.
3. PKBM Bunga Kembang is an informal school established by KKI Warsi. We carry out community empowerment programs to obtain their basic rights, especially in the field of education. We live with the community for a period of 1-2 weeks a month. We take a participatory approach in the process of carrying out activities.

4. Recently collaborated with SEAMEO-Australia Education Links Award (SAELA) for Our (photo)Voice activities: Children and Young People's Joint Action Research on Student Wellbeing for All. The activities carried out are research on the wellbeing conditions of Orang Rimba children through photo voice. The method used is for children to take photos of things they like and narrate the contents of the photos to the mentor.

5. The project team is based in Jambi City, while the location of the Orang Rimba Community is in Bukit Suban Village, Sarolangun Regency, a distance of around 200 KM (7 hours driving). In working on the project, the team plans to visit the project location three times. Meanwhile, activities with public campaigns will be carried out in Jambi City.

Endorsment from Ardzun[edit]

I think this proposal need support, because Indonesia needs applicant who focus on liberating the knowledge from the isolated community. I've already known the applicant have had linguistic background and also had contribute on Wikimedia especially in Minangkabau community. Ardzun (talk) 04:04, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Follow-up Questions from ESEAP Regional Funds Committee and Programme Officer[edit]

Hello @Onyaso,

Thank you for your interest in the rapid fund programme. Your grant application is currently in the eligibility check phase led by the WMF grants administration team. We have also started the proposal review process in parallel.

Would you be able to provide responses to the following questions? Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Jacqueline on behalf of the ESEAP Funds Committee

--

1) Would you be able to provide the links of the virtual exhibition, children's ebooks and ebooks as links may be broken.

2) Would it be possible to share how do you plan to recruit the 40 wiktionary editors? And how do you think the efforts of the project can be continued after the grant is completed? Are there plans to engage the Wikimedia Indonesian community and/or Wikimedia Indonesia?

3) Could you share more about the participatory approach you plan to adopt in centering the experience of the Orang Rimba community in documenting their culture and language through this project? How can they play a more active role in running and leading the project?

4) Would you be able to share your personal and/or professional experience in working with underrepresented communities in preserving their culture and heritage as equal partners in Indonesia or in the ESEAP region?

5) Could you elaborate more on the public campaign? For example the messaging, the outreach, the materials, representation of Orang Rimba community in the communication materials? Do you plan to connect with the Media?

6) What types of best practices and guidelines do you observe, adopt and take reference from when working on preserving the culture and heritage of Orang Rimba community as a non native speaker?

7) What do you hope to learn from this project? And how do you plan to share your learnings with the wider Wikimedia community?

Thank you. JChen (WMF) (talk) 06:28, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Jaquline, I apologise for the delay in checking the continuation of our conversation on the talk page. Here are the detailed answers to the information you requested.
1. Past activities with partners can be accessed here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1my2eyQqsrjzJbG74pH6W5mjXVVgXS7J2?usp=sharing
2. We plan to collaborate with two university institutions in Jambi, the Indonesian Literature Study Programme at Jambi University and the Indonesian Language Education Study Programme at UIN Sultan Taha Saifuddin. We will involve university students as beginner editors in Wiktionary Indonesia.
3. In the documentation there is already a Rimba language dictionary in book form. We think that direct and participatory involvement is through recording the pronunciation directly done by the Orang Rimba.
4. We are an advocate of Orang Rimba for the past 5 years, particularly in the delivery of their basic rights services such as education, health, and administration. Based on this experience, we understand that the lack of human resources of the Orang Rimba has resulted in the absence of a written history of their culture. It is feared that this will fade their culture.
5. We will make a story telling video of Orang Rimba telling about their culture in Rimba language. A simple conversation in Rimba language. We will show this video before the Wiktionary training on campus. In addition, we plan to write about the documentation of the Rimba language done by this project and publish it to local media in Jambi.
6. Good practice is to directly involve the community as information providers. The use of Bahasa Rimba when communicating with them can also be adopted in this project's activities. During the activities with the community, we realised that the use of digital media is very interesting to them, so by providing training on the use of digital technology to them we hope that this project can be implemented well.
7. Through this project, we hope that the Orang Rimba community will gain confidence in the jungle language. And to the wider audience, we hope to increase knowledge about the jungle language, which is one of the richest languages in Indonesia.
The way to provide learning is by sharing with the Wikimedia Indonesia community regarding language documentation for marginalised communities. Onyaso (talk) 11:05, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Grant Application has not been successful[edit]

Dear @Onyaso,

Thank you for your rapid fund application and for taking time to respond to the follow-up questions. We also really appreciate your taking time to go on a call with @spramudya and myself last week.

Your grant application has not been approved at this time. We were looking for a stronger and more sustainable wikimedia community engagement, while also having native speakers (as much as possible), co-implement or lead projects that seek to document their culture and heritage.

We hope you will continue to contribute to the Wikimedia movement and look forward to connecting again if you wish to explore other ideas for projects.
