Questions on OpenRefine integration and expected impact[edit]

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for submitting this proposal that has been found as a relevant and valuable contribution to expanding the tooling around Wikibase. The proposal offers clear planning for the implementation and is well-supported by other volunteer developers and community members. We particularly appreciate that the proposed app will also benefit non-developers and people with limited technical knowledge. We would like to understand a little better: 1) How will OpenRefine and the different scripts be integrated to make the tool really accessible to non-developers, and 2) Based on the experience with LexBib, what rates of adoption could be expected from this tool? Thank you very much for providing your plans and expectations on these aspects!

Kind regards,

On behalf of the reviewing team, Agnes Bruszik, Program Officer for Northern and Western Europe ABruszik-WMF (talk) 10:54, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your questions. (1) For connecting OpenRefine to a custom Wikibase instance, the necessary modules already exist, together with a comprehensive documentation. This works independently of the proposed Zotero export app; we plan to provide a detailed documentation covering the whole workflow, with examples on processing bibliographical data (in particular, how author, publisher, and place names can be reconciled against entities on the own Wikibase and/or against Wikidata entities. For the latter, we will provide a script that imports Wikidata entities to the custom Wikibase, in case those still don't exist there, which is verified by the script using SPARQL queries to the custom Wikibase). (2) As stated in the project proposal, the existing tool for sending Zotero output to Wikidata (which could well be adopted for custom Wikibase instances) does not offer any literal-entity reconciliation, which is the essential feature for LOD-ification, of course. Therefore, we think that any user interested in migrating bibliographical data from Zotero to Wikibase might rather use the proposed tool. Another reason for that is the enhanced usability (in comparison to the existing tool), since Zotero data with the new tool would be exported in one step to the custom Wikibase, and literals to be reconciled would be exported to a CSV sheet ready for import into OpenRefine (and another script which would replace the literals in the custom Wikibase with reconciled entites, without the user having to understand technical details of that export process.
