Hello Jani Pereira, thank you for submitting this rapid grant application. We have reviewed it and would like to make a funding decision as soon as possible. To help us make that decision we have a few questions and comments regarding your application:

  1. It’s wonderful to see that the potential participants all have deep knowledge about biology and/or experience with the parks. However, do any of the participants have experience organizing, running, or participating in edit-a-thons?
  2. Could you please edit your application to include the number of participants you hope to have at the edit-a-thons?
  3. Could you please edit your application to include the number of Wikipedia and Wikivoyage articles you hope to improve/update?
  4. Editing or creating 50 Wikidata entries is a good goal for an edit-a-thon or series of edit-a-thons. However, given that you’re doing such an extensive photowalk (16 hours over two days) we would hope to see more material added to various Wiki sites. Do you have a plan in the long run for doing so?
  5. Your budget includes a line item called “Organization of the event São Paulo - PETAR/Iporanga.” Could you please provide more information on what that means? As your guidelines and criteria state, we cannot provide funds to pay for people’s time, even for project coordination/organization.
  6. Could you also please provide more information in your budget on what the funds for the two edit-a-thons will cover? Is that money going towards renting a space, or buying food/drinks, or providing prizes?
  7. What percentage of the 500 photos you anticipate taking will be taken by the drone? While we do support equipment rental for projects, we prefer to fund requests for essential equipment. Given that this is your largest budget item, we want to understand how much of a contribution it will make to the overall project.
  8. You mentioned there’s the potential for that the planned project to be interrupted or delayed by weather, and that in that event you would want to reschedule or register the heritage of Iporanga. Please note that any changes to the activities of a funded grant need prior written approval, and it would be our strong preference that you reschedule the event rather than changing its focus. If you decide to change its focus you would need to sign an amendment to your grant before we could allow any funds to be used for different activities.

We look forward to reading your responses and making a funding decision. Thank you for taking the time to make these edits! Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 20:15, 27 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi WJifar (WMF)
Thank you for reviewing my application and sorry for the delay in replying.
I have already made the requested modifications to the proposal and will add more information here:
1. Yes, we will have experienced editors available to help the newer users in every edit-a-thon.
I have also been preparing for this project, receiving training, participating in edit-a-thon and photowalk. I was even awarded as one of the biggest contributors to Wiki Loves Monuments Brazil 2019 for the photos recorded during a photowalk ([1]).
2. We hope to have until 10 participants in each activities.
One of the reasons for this modest expectation is the change in the date of the activities, which we had hoped for at the end of 2019 but changed to the beginning of 2020. Unfortunately, in Brazil, it is normal for people to be more engage in post-carnival activities when the year really "begins". We are also considering the city structure and population, as the activities will be done in a small town (less than 5000 inhabitants).
4. About the photowalk, PETAR is made up of several tourist attractions, however they can present different degrees of challenges. Many of them are difficult to access, have restricted access and/or require the use of photographic techniques (and time consuming) to be recorded in good quality. Because of their higher degree of difficulty some places have fewer or no records on Wiki sites. It will take many hours of work (e.g. hiking trails, taking pictures) to ensure that we register as many places as possible without losing quality.
5. So far I've been negotiating the project with Iporanga officials, Nayene de Oliveira Franco (Secretary of Tourism and Environment) and Julio Antonio de Oliveira Franco (president of the Municipal Tourism Council), at distance (by email and phone) . They want to participate and are ready to honor their part of the project, but have invited us to a face-to-face meeting to organize the event in the city, such as selecting the location of edit-a-thon, knowing where to stay, setting the route with the local guides and others responsible for the organization. So, unfortunately, we have to make face-to-face meeting to ensure that the work is done optimally and safely for everyone involved and the item “Organization of the event São Paulo - PETAR/Iporanga” will be used to cover these transportation and food/drinks costs.
Seizing the opportunity, I am updating the value of the required resources: “expensives São Paulo to Iporanga/PETAR” because because we will need a big car to get into some areas; and excluding “Payment for all guides” because I negotiated the tour guides and they will be provided by the city.
8. Okay and thanks for the info. I will provide a second date to reschedule the event if necessary. Jani Pereira (talk) 21:33, 1 December 2019‎ (UTC)Reply

One Last Question[edit]

Hello Jani Pereira, thank you for providing answers to most of our questions. Could you please answer the drone question as well:

  1. What percentage of the 500 photos you anticipate taking will be taken by the drone? While we do support equipment rental for projects, we prefer to fund requests for essential equipment. Given that this is your largest budget item, we want to understand how much of a contribution it will make to the overall project.

Once we have an answer for this question we can move forward with our proposal review. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 00:51, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi WJifar (WMF)
I'm sorry, I answered that question only in the proposal.
We believe that we will be able to better record the magnitude of the park with the drone, because it is difficult to find a position to frame various locations due to its size. For example, the Stone House is the largest porticoed cave in the world, about 215 meters high! So we are planning to take at least 5 photos from each place visited and make a video compiling the images recorded on the "climb" of the drone. I'm at your disposal for any further information you may need. Jani Pereira (talk) 12:08, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Approval[edit]

Hello Jani Pereira, thank you for answering all my questions. I am approving your grant request. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Change requested[edit]

Hello rapidgrants,

I would like to know if it is possible to make a change. As I had commented before, I was talking with representatives of the city (Iporanga/SP) where we will do one edit-a-thon and photowalk by e-mail and telephone but they demanded a face-to-face meeting to complete the project. Luckily, they will come to the capital (where I live, Sao Paulo/SP) and I wil have the opportunity to meet them here, which reduces meeting expense.
So if possible we would like to relocate the rest of the "Organization of the event Sao Paulo - PETAR/Iporanga" to fund one more day of photowalk (transportation, food and drinks for the volunteers) to register the park. The volunteers agree to the change and the and city representatives will continue to support us with accommodation and tour guides throughout our stay.
Can I used the rest of the money to the meeting to cover the difference between previous and current value of gasoline and maybe the food for one more day? Since the contract was signed at the previous dollar exchange rate, which has changed significantly since the proposal for reasons beyond our control, the remaining amount will be welcome to cover our currently project expenses.
Please let me know your opinion. Jani Pereira (talk) 19:07, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
