Grants talk:Project/Rapid/ROSEdu/Wikimedia Challenge/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hi User:Strainu. Thank you for your work on this project! I’m sorry to hear about the obstacles you faced in completing this project, but appreciate the efforts that you weant through to ensure it happened.

We have a few remaining questions/comments and look forward to hearing your response:

  1. What will recruiting a web developer add to support the event?
  2. How would you explain Wikimedia development in a way that would appeal to more participants?
  3. Per your expense report, what part of the expense does the flight go under?

You mentioned you have funds that you are planning on returning. Once we receive those founds, we will be able to accept your report.
Thank you again for all your work. Best, --SMalik (WMF) (talk)

Hi. The fiscal sponsors were still in discussions with the accountant on how exactly to register the returned funds, but I'll let you know as soon as the transfer is done. Here are the responses to your questions:
  1. The development community in Bucharest is segmented in interest groups with little overlap. Presumably, a web developer would give us access to groups with the good skills for participating in Wikimedia development from which to recruit participants. An experienced webdev would also give us an additional mentor to cover more participants.
  2. For students, there are 3 main incentives to participate:
    • school assignment. While we could get in contact with some teachers and work something up, the results of the education program show this approach would have low retention rates
    • the appeal of the projects. This is what we've been pushing forward, and it only depends on us to make the project look more interesting, for instance by presenting all the optimisations done on the Wikimedia servers and all the cutting-edge tech we're using. This should be done before the hackathons.
    • the value for future employment. As described in the report, the Linux Kernel offers immediate benefits as many companies mention contributions to the kernel as a plus point in internship and junior positions. I'm not sure how this could be done on the local level, but perhaps we could gather stories from previous GSoC/Outreachy students that show how the Wikimedia experience helped them in their careers.
  3. The flight is the first prize in the report. I changed the report to clarify.--Strainu (talk) 20:29, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Strainu. Thank you for your responses. I have accepted your report. Please confirm when you have sent back your remaining funds. Until we have received your remaining funds, you will not be able to apply for another grant.
