Comments from WMF[edit]

Hi, SuperHamster, thank you for submitting this final report! Could you please update it with a link to the appropriate category on Commons? Many thanks, LSmith (WMF) (talk) 19:40, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @LSmith (WMF): I've added a link to the category (and some other useful links) under the Outcomes section. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:45, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Report accepted[edit]

Hi, SuperHamster, thank you for adding those links! I am now accepting this report. Please note that the grant will not be complete until we accept the expense documentation and resolve the underspend. Below are some comments and questions for reflection.

Comments and Questions

  1. Congratulations on another successful WLM! We're happy to hear that you not only beat your participation goals but increased participation compared to 2017. Participants captured some gorgeous images and it was fun to browse through them.
  2. The state-level guides seem incredibly helpful, so it's great to hear that continuing to expand them will be a focus moving forward.
  3. The WLM map is also an excellent new addition. Integrating with state-level site data into it would be an excellent next step in its development.
  4. The contest is clearly serving as a great way to introduce new people to the Wikimedia movement. Have you explored any avenues for keeping those people engaged and/or tracking their engagement after the contest?
  5. What tweaks could you make to the pre-judging process to make it easier for judges?
  6. What ideas do you have to involve new judges?

Many thanks for all your hard work on this grant, and for sharing what you learned with WMF and the community. I look forward to helping you close out the expense documentation and resolve the remaining funds.

@LSmith (WMF): Thank you for the encouraging feedback! Here are answers to your questions:
Have you explored any avenues for keeping those people engaged and/or tracking their engagement after the contest?
Each year, we invite the previous year's participants back to try and get some repeat-contributors. Beyond that, we haven't explored other avenues. Doing some analysis to see how many editors come back to contribute, as well as sending out post-event messages to encourage contributions, are options worth doing for 2019's event.
What tweaks could you make to the pre-judging process to make it easier for judges?
This year, we did pre-judging after all submissions have been received, which means we were a bit rushed. We can pro-actively do pre-judging throughout the upload period, which would allow us to be more thorough. We can also bring on more folks to help with the pre-jury round. Finally, we may also look at tweaking the rules; if we adjust the existing criteria to be more strict (without introducing false positives), or introduce more criteria, that means fewer images for judges to go through.
What ideas do you have to involve new judges?
It really comes down to inviting more judges earlier. Being both a Wikimedia event and the world's largest photography contest, the vast majority of people we ask (Commoners, photographers, museum staff, historical society members, etc.) are more than happy to help, and if they say no it's usually due to time commitment. If we can recruit more judges early on, that means judging will be less of a time commitment and we'll be more easily able to recruit judges. I'm also now considering creating an informative invitation flyer for judges, explaining the contest and the judging process, which can be easily distributed and answer any and all questions potential judges may have.
Let me know if I can provide any other details. Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:23, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
