Grants talk:Project/Rapid/UG GE/Wikipedia Asian Month 2018 in Georgia/Report

Report accepted[edit]

Hi, Mehman97, thank you for submitting this final report and your expense documentation. I have reviewed and am accepting both. Congratulations on completing this grant!

  • Congratulations on creating or improving so many articles! That's really impressive, given that you only had 12 editors and 4 were new. How was the experience for the new editors?
  • Why do you think participation was lower than expected?
  • Would you change anything next time to attract more participants, or does a smaller group work better?
  • You mentioned that there was an attempt to destabilize the conference during registration. Can you elaborate on what happened?

Thank you for all your hard work on this grant. We appreciate you sharing what you learned with WMF and the community. If you have anything else you'd like to share now or in the future, we would welcome hearing it!

Hi LSmith (WMF), thanks for reviewing the report and for feedback. I will try to quickly and briefly answer your questions.

  • Yes, it really turned out to be a very good contest where so few editors were able to write so many articles. New editors were able to very quickly master the specifics of working on Wikipedia, one of them specifically mastered these specifics very well. I think they will become good Wikipedians in the future.
  • There are various reasons why so few people took part in the competition. I want to point out two main reasons:
1) The competition was held in November, when all the country's educational institutions (schools, universities) are working. Most editors of Wikipedia school students and university students. They probably don't have enough time to work on Wikipedia.
2) In Georgia, which is a former post-Soviet country, a culture of volunteering is not sufficiently developed, as well as adaptation to the latest technologies, but fortunately this trend is changing for the better and we try to activate it with our work.
  • Each time we change something in the projects, taking into account the previous experience. In the future, we are going to increase the time of each contest, as well as to conduct a series of trainings on Wikipedia work with the contestants.
  • On this issue, I submitted detailed information to the Trust and Safety and to the AffCom. A specific issue is related to another conflict that is related to Wikipedia. If you are interested in the details, please write me an e-mail and write you all in details.

Thanks for everything, if there are any questions, please write and I will be happy to answer them. Best, --Mehman 97 12:20, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mehman97, thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful answer!

  • I'm happy to hear that the new editors were able to pick it up quickly and that one in particular seemed very engaged.
  • In terms of participation, it sounds like both factors (the culture of volunteerism lacking in Georgia and the timing of the contest) are totally or somewhat out of your control. Even though you can draw important lessons from them and attempt to change things, we understand that you can't fully control the situation.
  • No need to discuss the issue with the contest further via email; I'm just happy to hear that you have followed up with someone about it :-)

Hi LSmith (WMF). Yes, unfortunately, some factors I can not control, but we are trying to fix them. Thanks for everything. Best, --Mehman 97 10:24, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
