A few questions from the Participation Support Committee[edit]

Hello, Bathlander: Thanks for this request and your exciting work at the Smithsonian Art Museum. I have a few questions on behalf of the committee:

  1. Have you also considered seeking funding from the museum to attend the conference since your attendance seems to directly benefit your professional activities there, or is there a reason why you think the PSP is the more appropriate source of funding?

I have! Sadly, our budget grows smaller each year and I do not have much funding left to support travel in FY2013. The museum will be able to contribute by covering meals, incidental expenses, and travel to and from the airport, but they are not able to fund the full trip. If you are willing to reimburse some part of the USD 650 that I requested rather than the full amount, I might be able to negotiate for them to contribute more.

  1. Would you please provide a little more clarity about your participation in the event? As you may know, we're much more inclined to fund requests when the participation may be considered active (for example, a volunteer is presenting or coordinating a workshop as distinct form attending an event). I understand that this event may not be in a traditional conference format at that participation may be to some extent built-in, but some additional information about that might be helpful since the agenda on the website provided doesn't provide much detail; for example, are you presenting any case studies from your work?

Of course! the majority of the two-day event will consist of workshops and sessions devoted to exploring and learning about OpenGLAM and it's related projects and opportunities. While I won't be giving a pre-planned formal presentation, I plan to be a very active participant in the workshops and the unconference. I will share my experiences from the two edit-a-thons that I have hosted, and talk about some of the challenges and lessons-learned that have resulted from these events. I will also use this event to prepare a presentation on GLAM for staff at the Smithsonian in order to help answer common concerns and to get more Smithsonian museums interested in participating (and more staff members participating in the edit-a-thons!)

Don't hesitate to let me know if you need more info, and thanks for the opportunity! Bathlander (talk) 17:56, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
