In-Person Workshop and Editathon, Wa

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project Overview

This program is one of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group support for community engagement activities for its sister language communities. The program is intended to empower the Dagaare Wikimedia Community members to scale up their contributions to the Dagaare Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects aside from Wikipedia. Currently, the community has active volunteers who are only editing on Wikipedia. Even with that, there are many articles they have created on the Dagaare Wikipiideɛ without images to enhance the beauty and compression of the subject matter of those articles. Articles that are concerned about the typical Dagaare traditions, and folk culture are usually the ones without the images because they have not been documented online, and in effect, there are no resources available online about them. The community members however do not know how to get and upload the appropriate images on Wikimedia Commons and in turn, use them on their corresponding articles. Also, they have little knowledge of Wikidata which prevents them from appropriately creating and/or linking the Wikipedia articles with their corresponding Wikidata items. All these challenges have triggered the impending workshop and editathon as a platform to get them resolved.

PROJECT GOAL

The project is intended to select and train fifteen (15) dedicated community volunteers to empower them with basic editing skills on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The training will focus on how to create Wikidata items, how to add labels and descriptions to the existing items in Dagaare, and how to link items to their corresponding Wikipedia articles. There will also be a hands-on session for participants to upload images on Wikimedia Commons and add the appropriate labels, descriptions and categories.
