Internet freedom

In the aftermath of the SOPA/PIPA debates, a number of groups in the US have been discussing how to define standards for a free Internet, to help identify that sort of potential problem farther in advance.

There are efforts to draft an "Internet Bill of Rights" and an "Internet Declaration" as well as other groups trying to form a global notification system for broadcasting to the Internet when some group or government action threatens basic 'net freedoms. (Of course there are parts of the world where the Internet is not at all free; but this would help keep everyone informed of future efforts to limit freedoms around the worlds.)

Wikipedians, particularly on the English and Italian wikipedias, have been active participants in protests and awareness-raising campaigns to counter specific challenges to Internet freedom in 2011 and 2012.

As of mid-2012, there is an active effort in Italy to continue those efforts; many efforts in Europe to counter ACTA, and many efforts in the US to counter CISPA and derivatives of SOPA as well as to start a coalition of Internet and advocacy groups to broadcast alerts in the future.
