Knowledge Transfer Initiatives's offcial logo

The Knowledge Transfer Initiative (KTI) is an initiative inspired by the WMF's Let's Connect initiative. The Wikimedia movement is a bundle of knowledge-space driven by the success of thousands of Wikimedia related projects organized by the Wikimedia Community.

The key driver of these projects is the skill-sets deployed for each project. This initiative aims at transferring the knowledge from past successful projects organized by various Wikimedia affiliates (Chapters, User Groups, thematic groups) and individuals to affiliates or individuals interested in replicating the projects or acquire new skills to design a new project. This would also ensure that the insights and lesson learned from these projects have the greatest possible impact on the community, and Wikimedia projects.

This would be achieved via trainings, workshops, symposiums and talks by Wikimedia experts, and the project leads within, and outside the Wikimedia movement.

Objectives[edit]

  • To build capacity for new and existing Wikimedia affiliates (Chapters, User Groups, and hubs thematic groups)
  • To ensure that the insights and lesson learned from past projects have the greatest possible impact on the community, and Wikimedia projects.
  • To promote collaborations among Wikimedia affiliates
  • Promote quality contributions to Wikimedia projects
  • To engage Wikimedia affiliates (Chapters, User Groups, and hubs thematic groups)
  • To promote the implementation of Wikimedia movement strategy recommendation on "manage internal knowledge" and skill investment"

Who benefits from the KTI[edit]

The knowledge transfer initiatives would prioritized Wikimedia affiliates (Chapters, User Groups, thematic groups), individual Wikimedians, and mission-aligned organization who are interested in learning new skills, and replicating past successful projects.

Assumptions[edit]

  • Since the inception of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the organisation has funded projects that has resulted in the expansion of the Wikimedia movement.
  • There are members of the Wikimedia community struggling with skill-sets needed to execute new projects, while some noble ideas dies due to lack of relevant skill-sets and guidance by experienced project executors.
  • The knowledge and skills exposition by each project is unique and transferable.
  • Some project leads are willing to transferring or sharing specific skills if there is a platform for them to impact the knowledge or skills.
  • The project will bring successful project executors in contact with interested community members for mentoring and guidance.

Methodology[edit]

As mentioned "Skill-sets category", a project can deploy all the skill-sets mentioned above for its execution, so the methodology will focus on using a project as a case for practising the obejective of the project.

  • Identify one or multiple projects with similar features- with a final and accepted report by WMF as case study.
  • The key learning pattern will be divided into training and hands-on session.
  • The grantee will expose to specific skill sets used in the execution of the project.
  • We will reach out to grantees to seek their availability to participate in the project.
