Common.css vs Shared.css

I've been attempting to adjust my wikitable class in Common.css for hours, to no avail. While researching and coming across this page, I tried adding the text suggested above to include Common.css in my SkinTemplate.php file, but that resulted in an error (the text that user said to replace wasn't there, so I futilely tried adding the replacement text anyway, knowing that wouldn't work). Not a single change to Common.css made its way to my tables.

So I looked at the difference between Shared.css and Common.css. The only differences I can see are 1) I can't edit Shared.css directly from my wiki and 2) editing Shared.css works.

Is there any reason not to edit Shared.css on my private wiki? Is Common.css simply more accepted? Is there anything I can do to get it to work in Common.css? (I really do prefer doing things the proper way). I'm using Mediawiki version 1.14.0.

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated. 67.188.252.135 23:39, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Edit the actual wiki pages, don't edit the physical files. If you edit the physical files, you'll make upgrading much harder and much more likely to break things. --MZMcBride 05:47, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the word of caution, but I'm unable to follow the advice if I'm unable to edit the common.css file through the actual wiki page and see any of the changes reflected there. I'd like to alter my settings properly.
I suppose my question, at its core, is "why don't changes I've made to common.css show up, even after forcing a cache refresh?" --67.188.252.135 06:02, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
