October 2020 Wiki* Art Edit: Arts and Artists in North Carolina[edit]
The Wiki* Monthly Art Edit is an informal gathering hosted by the Sloane Art Library, for editing Wikipedia, Wikimedia, and Wikidata entries related to art.
Join us October 16, 2020, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (EDT) when the Edit will explore the arts in North Carolina, with a focus on improving Wikipedia articles about artists and arts organizations in our state!

Resources for Researching the Arts in North Carolina[edit]
Artist Bios[edit]
- Qualla Arts and Crafts -- Many artists bios of Eastern NC Cherokee Artists
- Diamante -- Profiles of Hispanic and Latinx artists (mostly visual artists)
- African American Music Trails -- Includes musician information under “Meet the Musicians”
- North Carolina Arts Council, also includes NC Poet Laureates and NC Heritage awards:
- North Carolina Museum of Art Learn Website -- Could be used to find information about a specific artist
More Comprehensive and Overview Sites[edit]
- NCpedia record on Arts Organizations in NC -- Gives a good overview and includes many links
- North Carolina African American Heritage Commission -- More of an overview site, with links to other resources, but talks about AA related historic sites, digital collections
- UNC School of the Arts Digital Collections -- many NC artists attended, tons of links to photos
- DigitalNC --tons of digital resources, though not necessarily art-related but worth a search if you have a name
- North Carolina Digital Collections --another site with a statewide focus, also has a large amount of government records/publications
Crafts, Theater, Dance, Music Organizations[edit]
- North Carolina Black Repertory Company -- Has info about the National Black Theater Festival and the Company itself
- Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts -- Their craftsperson database has many records - includes beyond NC. Note that this resource loads very slowly
- North Carolina Symphony -- just FYI - not too many resources here unless writing about the Symphony as an organization
- Music Maker Relief Foundation -- works on preserving the musical traditions of the South through direct support to musicians, as well as "documentation and performance programs that build knowledge and appreciation of America’s musical traditions." Not NC-specific, but you can find many NC artists here!
Book Arts Centers and Book Arts Organizations[edit]
- Exhibitions List for Gallery, at Asheville BookWorks -- this Exhibitions list might provide ideas for Wikipedia articles for individual artists
- Instructors List, at Asheville BookWorks-- maybe another helpful resource for exhibitions info for individual artists?
- Artists' List at The Penland School of Crafts-- tons of artists listed here by media, with links to their websites for more information. Potentially a great starting point, for exploring.
- North Carolina Artists' Books at UNC Charlotte -- this LibGuide has an embedded map/mini-exhibit with detailed info on specific artists books by NC artists, and links to catalog data
- NC Book Festival -- festival for all kinds of books, but might be worth searching for specific authors
- Guide from Duke University Libraries - Artists' Books by Women: Manuscript Collections -- useful as a citation source to include in articles about specific artists?
- Artists' Books in Reed College's Special Collections -- not a North Carolina institution, obviously, but a wonderful website to explore that likely contains NC artists. Might be useful as a source to cite.

- Romare Bearden -- artist born in Charlotte, NC. This page is already very comprehensive, but links to specific artworks and/or collections information could be helpful to add.
- Beverly Buchanan -- artist born in Fuquay, NC, and graduated from Bennett College, in Greensboro, NC, a historically black women's college, with a bachelor of science degree in medical technology.
- Jugtown Pottery (Jacques and Juliana Busbee) - founded 1921 in Raleigh NC
- Senora Lynch - potter, member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe
- Susan Morgan Leveille - textile artist
- Clarissa Sligh -- book artist
