Nigerian Wikimedians for Sustainable Development Campus Tour 2023

Wikipedia-SDGs Campus Tour 2.0, IMSU Edition was held between 13th - 14th July, 2023 at the Department of Igbo Linguistics, Imo State University, Owerri. The project was carried out to create Wikipedia awareness and sensitize the students on the topic of SDGs 3, 5 & 13 through the Wikipedia online resources.

The project was was segmented in two phases:

  • Introduction of SDGs with a core focus on SDGs 3, 5 & 13.
  • Introduction of Wikipedia which include: Detailed explanation on the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia, creating of Usernames for the participants, walking them through on the knowledge of translation using the Wikipedia Content Translation Tool and finally engaging them on a hands-on-translation of SDG contents on the English Wikipedia which they translated on the Igbo Wikipedia for elaborate and detailed understanding of the contents.

Furthermore, the participants were provided with curated lists of SDGs contents which they were assigned to translate within the period of 3 weeks and the top 3 highest contributors were awarded various prizes and the participants were glad to have participated.

  • 48 New Registered Editors on the Dashboard,
  • 361 Articles created
  • 366 Edits
  • 387 Total Edits
  • 427k Words Created

Wikipedia-SDGs Campus Tour 2.0, FUTO Edition was held between 21st-22nd Sept. 2023 at the Public Health Department, Federal University of Technology Owerri. The project was carried out to create a Sustainable Development Goals Awareness through Wikipedia.

For the two days, we engaged the participants on:

  • Introduction of SDGs with a core focus on SDGs 3, 5 & 13.
  • Introduction of the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia. Teaching the participants on how to create their Usernames so as to be able to contribute meaningfully. The participants were also shown how to translate using the Wikipedia Content Translation Tool and finally engaging them on a hands-on-translation of SDG contents on the English Wikipedia which they translated on the Igbo Wikipedia for elaborate and detailed understanding of the contents.

A curated list of SDG-related articles were assigned to the participants to engage them in a 3-weeks Translate-a-ton Contest and at the end of the contest, the Top 3 participants were awarded prizes for their active contributions and it was a moment of joy and bliss for them.

ALVAN IKOKU FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION,OWERRI

Wikipedia-SDGs Campus Tour 2.0, Alvan Edition was held between 7th - 8th March, 2024 at the Igbo Language Department, Alvan Ikoku Federal Colleged of Education, Owerri. The project was carried out to create a Sustainable Development Goals Awareness through Wikipedia.

For the two days, we engaged the participants on:

  • Introduction of SDGs with a core focus on SDGs 3, 5 & 13.
  • Introduction of the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia. Teaching the participants on how to create their Usernames so as to be able to contribute meaningfully.
