This report presents activities by the Ohio Wikimedians User Group during their fourth year, July 2022 - July 2023.
Throughout the year, Ohio Wikimedians User Group membership grew by 4.
Projects
WikiConference North America 2022[edit]
WikiConference North America (WCNA) is the annual conference of Wikimedia enthusiasts and volunteers throughout the continent. WikiConference North America 2022 took place virtually from November 11-12, 2022, in partnership with OpenStreetMap US. The theme for the year's conference was open knowledge allies.
A number of Ohio Wikimedians were in attendance, with Ohio Wikimedian Kevin Payravi helping organize.
Athens Edit-a-thon[edit]
On March 29, 2023, Ohio University hosted an Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. 10 editors contributed 45 edits across 25 articles, adding 3,400+ words and 25 references.
Columbus Edit-a-thons[edit]
The Ohio State Center for Ethnic Studies invited the Ohio Wikimedians to host two edit-a-thons at both the Ohio State University and Columbus Libraries.
Center for Ethnic Studies Edit-a-thon[edit]
On March 31, 2023, Kevin Payravi and User:CarCai, with support from Leila, led an introduction to Wikipedia and an editing workshop for Ohio State's Humanities Institute and Center for Ethnic Studies. Participants had a chance to dive in and contribute to Wikipedia, especially in topics related to Asian American Studies, American Indian Studies, and Latinx Studies, as well as other articles pertaining to ethnicity.
Over the course of two days, participants achieved the following:
- 8 articles drafted and created
- 19 articles edited
- 80 total edits
- 3.34k words added
- 69 references added
Columbus Libraries Edit-a-thon[edit]
On April 1, 2023, Kevin Payravi was invited to the Columbus Metropolitan Library Northside Branch to present "Get Wiki With It: An Introduction to Wikipedia Editing". The event was attended by both experienced Wikipedia editors and newcomers. Participants took a particular interest in articles relating to Columbus, as well as uploading photos to the Wikimedia Commons.
